Yes, a mist coat can be too thick. If you don’t dilute the mist coat enough and you apply a thick coat to the wall, the plaster won’t be able to evenly absorb the coat. This can cause the later coats of paint to not adhere to the mist coat or plaster, leaving behind flaking, peeling, or bubbling paint. Even if it doesn’t flake or peel right away, a thick primary layer of mist coat can also cause the final paint job to look uneven.

If you want your paint to have a smooth finish, the technique you use is very important. Keep your brush at a 90-degree angle while applying the paint and feather as you go. Between coats, sand the wall lightly using a very high grit sand sponge of at least 220 grit.

This may come down to personal preference, but it’s generally best to paint the ceiling before you paint the walls. Why? Painting the ceiling can be more physically demanding, and painting the ceiling last may result in drips or splatters that would mess up freshly painted walls. By painting the ceiling first, you’ll avoid having to touch up walls after any painting accidents. It may not matter, though, if you’re painting the ceiling the same color as the walls.

Because satin paint has a sheen to it, it will highlight curves and contours. While that’s great for trim, it’s not so excellent for your repaired drywall that has a few small blemishes. In addition, satin paint will stick to your surface better if it’s primed. Sand and prime your surface before applying satin paint for best results.
