"Highly recommend. I had several repairs needed around my house. Gault met with me within one day, carefully reviewed all of my items, and provided thoughtful perspectives. I expressed that one repair was particularly urgent and Gault worked with me to have the work performed the very next day. The work was done with very high quality and professionalism. I am very satisfied and look forward to potential future engagements. The urgent work we had done was replacing a load bearing 6x6 leg on my screened-in porch."

Customers say: Quick response

Rob's Custom Carpentry offers services to the Charlotte, NC Metro Area. With over 43 years of experience, we take great pride in our craftsmanship and offering our customers the "Midas Touch" in satisfaction! \n\nIt all started one summer in 1974 when I picked up my Army shovel my Dad had given me and I started digging a basement under the crawl space of our house. The reason for digging a full size basement under a house with only a crawl space at the time was to build my mother a tornado shelter. An F-4 Tornado had recently struck a small town only 15 miles away and had scared my Mom to death! \n\nI was 14 years old at the time but quite advanced in construction methods due to my vast experience from my earlier years as construction foreman of "The Sandbox"!\n\nWhether you're building or remodeling or you need your Basement or Attic space finished off, please sent us a message with your contact info and we will get in touch with you as soon as possible.

"They did a great job! My roof looks great! Reliable and kept me well informed about everything. They kept cost in mind and cleaned up nicely after themselves. Serge even came out late to tarp the roof until it could get repaired so that I didnâ t have any further damage to the house waiting for the roof. They were very nice to work with. Great people. I canâ t say enough good things about them!"

"I hired Michael and brought on board after four other contractors could not meet my standards. I put Michael to the test and I was amazed with the work. Michael did the following for me; 100% full kitchen remodel and bathroom remodel, 4 other rooms for sheet rock work that included patch work sanding painting from top to bottom ceiling and walls; last 2 exterior door installs that he did the removal, pluming and re-framing. Being that I am a contractor myself I am very critical, I tried to find any issue with Michael's work and I could not. He is a gentleman's gentleman his focus on customer service is paramount, I highly recommend Michael for general contract work old or new."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

While some highly experienced homeowners can frame a house independently, it is not advisable. You will need ample carpentry experience, a team of helpers, and professionals to sign off on your work to meet local building codes. For the safest outcome, we recommend buying or building a house with the guidance of professionals.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Framing a house with steel generally takes less time—around five to eight weeks—than most building materials. The steel components can also be made quickly off-site and manufactured with pre-punched holes for running piping and electrical wiring, which will lessen the prep work and extra labor during construction.

House framing can be expensive because the materials are pricey, and the job requires a high level of expertise. The more complex the plans, the more expensive the job, but even the most basic frame needs to be installed with high-quality materials and precision. When pricing your home’s framework, remember that a sturdy frame is necessary to create a safe structure.
