While keeping any critter away permanently isn’t always possible, you can keep mice away from your home by setting traps, fumigating your space, and sealing known entry points. Like many animals, gophers are bothered by strong scents. Peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil,  and coffee grounds can be used as deterrents against these pests. Similarly, you can try planting lavender, rosemary, sage, geraniums, or pine trees, as these plants all have strong smells that can ward away gophers. While it may be less pleasant to work with, coyote urine scares gophers by tricking the pests into thinking your yard is a predator hot spot.

Depending on the size of a termite colony and how quickly it matures, it can take three to five years to see visible damage. It may take five to six years for termites to damage your home's structural integrity. Subterranean termites, which are found in all states except Alaska, are known to be particularly damaging and can cause extensive damage in as little as two years.
