"Hired this company to correct a boggy area in my horse pasture. They installed drains and gravel. After 2 months there is still no change in the wet area. Not only that, the area is actually worse as all the ground is churned up and there is gravel everywhere. The pasture is complexly unusable. He also left deep ruts in my pasture and front lawn from his equipment and rocks everywhere! I spent days cleaning up. I have asked for my money back as I now have to hire another company to fix everything he did wrong and redo the entire project, but he refuses. The owner of this company is 16 years old, which I did not know when I hired him. He has equipment and some knowledge but not enough for complex jobs, and does not have the professionalism to start by his work."

The dimensions of a 500-gallon concrete septic tank can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but the tank is large enough to handle the wastewater of a small home with up to one bedroom. Septic leach lines are buried between 18 and 36 inches into the ground and are at least 6 inches under its surface. Keeping leach lines buried helps minimize odors, and it helps the system utilize bacteria and biological processes both underground and from the air to further treat and filter the wastewater.

If there’s a problem with your sewage system, you might notice water pooling on the ground around the tank, which could indicate an overflow. Clogged and sluggish drains or foul smells coming from your plumbing are also signs that there might be a blockage in your septic system.

While abandoning a tank without treating it and following strict rules is illegal, there are several other ways to dispose of an old septic tank. One standard method is to pump out and crush the tank where it rests and bury it in the soil. Another is to remove it and transport it to a landfill. Finally, if abandonment is the best option, your contractor must pump out the tank and fill it with inert material, such as sand or concrete, depending on local regulations.

Modern septic tanks have two lids: one that covers the inlet where wastewater flows into the tank and one that covers the outlet where the treated water flows out to the drain field. However, older septic tanks installed before 1975 may have only one lid. Because septic tanks last 20 to 40 years, if yours only has one lid, it may be time for a replacement.
