"Maxwell Construction is quick to respond to work orders and get the job done in a timely manner without skimping on the details. I had a 3-bedroom, 1-bath house with more than 1000 sq ft renovated by their crew in less than 2 weeks, which included painting, cabinet work, flooring, etc. at a reasonable price. Their crew installed laminate flooring in a 600-square-foot unit over the weekend. I had a deck with a railing built by their crew in a day, which was a last-minute inspection requirement to have the new tenant move in on time. I am currently having their crew complete siding repair and painting of the fascia on the exterior of a 4-plex to give it a freshened-up look. Yes, cedar is a popular option for shou sugi ban siding, which is a Japanese style of charring wood for a home’s exterior to finish and protect the material. Cedar shou sugi ban siding costs $15 per square foot on average, but ranges between $2 and $25 per square foot depending on your home’s size, the price of labor, and where you live.

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.

You may only need to repaint fiber cement siding every decade or so, but you should clean it every six to 12 months, depending on your local climate.
