Founded by Grant Smith, a commercial engineer and project manager turned residential contractor, we started Simpleside Construction in 2014. Simpleside Construction is based on the motto “Quality Made Easy”. It is our belief that quality craftsmanship does not have to be complex in execution, yet expected and paramount in each project. We use current design software and technology to provide our clients with a detailed view of their home renovation project. Furthermore, we set expectations based on our client's preferences and deliver high-quality craftsmanship to the Outer Banks.

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Periodic checks for moisture or pest issues ensure consistent performance.

While there are many different kinds of insulation, spray foam, blown-in, foam board, and batt and roll are the four types you’re most likely to see. That doesn’t mean they’re alike, though. Each one varies drastically in terms of cost, materials used, and how they’re installed—not to mention, how well they limit heat transfer.

Rigid foam board insulation is one of the safest insulation materials for basement walls. The panels offer a moisture barrier to prevent mold and mildew build-up. At the same time, this material is also fire-resistant, so you don’t have to worry as much about a fire breaking out as you would with spray foam insulation.

According to a report from Energy.gov, radiant barrier installations can save between 5% and 10% on your energy bill each month that your HVAC cooling is in operation. That fact can mean savings of up to more than $325 per year for homes that experience frequent direct sunlight and high summer temperatures.

Mineral wool has an excellent life expectancy of up to 50 years, provided it's kept dry and free of pests. Compared to fiberglass, with a life span of 20 to 30 years, mineral wool stacks up well for long-term cost savings. Sheep wool maintains a similar life span to fiberglass, while estimates for hemp wool insulation life expectancies are all over the board, ranging anywhere from 20 to 100 years.
