"Totally happy with this experience! Miguel is a professional and nice to work with! I will hire him again!!! My project was small, I knew I needed a carpenter and had not had any luck finding one. Miguel’s crew knew what they were doing, were professional and efficient! This was a good experience!! We had an interior antique window installed in an opening in a wall. We also needed trim to close the gap under a new dishwasher. Both projects turned out great!!"

"Started out with kitchen remodel, new flooring throughout the house and new shingles on one side of house. Added new doors and trim, new baseboards and window trim. Also had them get rid of popcorn ceilings. They did a fantastic job. The price was less than I anticipated. Hal and his crew are a good bunch to work with. Will definitely call them for future projects."

"Very reliable Contractor. HONEST, TRUSTWORTHY, sends pictures of Work PROGRESS, We live FAR from Kill Devil Hills so having a contractor like this means the world to us. HE has worked for us now for 25 YEARS. If you are wondering what kind of work this man does just drive by 1717 Bay Dr. KDH. He oversees Electrical work, plumbing work, a new concrete drive way, & Checks on our place. Keeps a key to our place. Michael is THE MOST DEPENDABLE CONTRACTOR at the OBX !!! If he does not do a good job for you I'll EAT MY HAT !!! HE IS A JACK OF ALL TRADES!"

"The actual roofing job in 2014 went fine. We were pleased with the initial work and the price. However, the company’s follow up is sorely lacking. They responded when we had a concern about some of the new roofing within a couple of weeks. Our second issue it took much longer to get a response from them. Now in 2019, we have been trying to get them to come and check out our roof for hail damage. We can’t get anyone to call us. Just some texts and passing off of responsibility. Their customer service is poor."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Upgrading your property through home building provides immediate storm resilience against harsh weather and reduces flood insurance premiums. In Kill Devil Hills, adding bedrooms or outdoor living spaces directly increases vacation rental income potential. Long-term benefits include higher property value appreciation, reduced maintenance needs, and stronger insurance continuity. Modernizing your structure to meet current coastal codes ensures your property remains safe, valuable, and fully compliant for years to come.

Helpful?

Retain your certificate of occupancy, original building permits, and all inspection sign-off sheets permanently after completing home building. For properties in NC, you must keep any coastal permit documentation and updated flood elevation certificates. Also, file updated surveys, plot plans, and insurance endorsements with your property records. These documents prove your structure meets local codes and remain essential for future real estate transactions, insurance claims, or additional property improvements.

Helpful?

Install temporary fencing around open piling areas, stairwells, and construction zones to protect your family during home building. Secure all materials daily to prevent dangerous wind-borne debris common in NC coastal environments. Ensure all new decks feature code-compliant guardrails with tightly spaced balusters to prevent falls. Mark your septic system clearly to avoid damage, and plan temporary relocation if the work disturbs harmful dust or mold inside older structures.

Helpful?

Verify your flood zone status and coastal jurisdiction requirements before planning home building. Schedule a pre-application meeting with local officials to confirm if your project triggers substantial improvement rules requiring full flood compliance. Review underground utility easements, septic system locations, and neighborhood deed restrictions. Finally, submit a complete permit application with structural plans that meet high-wind standards for Kill Devil Hills to ensure a smooth, fully compliant construction process.

Helpful?

Check your property's flood zone and coastal management status before starting home building. In Kill Devil Hills, strict setback requirements and piling foundations heavily restrict enclosed spaces below the base flood elevation. You must also account for sandy, unstable soil and high-wind structural load standards. Consult a local professional to inspect your existing foundation and determine if your layout requires structural reinforcement to meet current codes.
