"Overall the service was good. Our deck and porch look much better. We had some areas where stain overspray needed cleaning. It was a bit difficult getting them back out to do the clean up. Communication could have been more timely on the follow-up cleaning."

"Andino's painting was a wonderful choice. She had an opening and began work the very next day. We had a deck that had become very stained and weathered. She is a miracle worker as she worked on the project she brought the deck back to looking as it was the day it was installed. She sealed the deck with a two coat process and it is beautiful now. She is a very good worker and her prices are reasonable. I would highly recommend hiring her or your project. I will definitely be hiring her for my future projects."

"We worked with Weldon. He was very experienced at what we hired him to do. He was always prompt and very considerate. Project: power was deck and stain the six foot lattis wall around deck. It was in bad shap. Looks beautiful now. He also replaced boards on the pergola part."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Choices include wood, composite, and hardwoods, each with unique benefits.

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Before installing a new railing, check the condition of the deck frame and joists, especially around the perimeter where posts attach. If boards are loose, soft, or show signs of rot, the structure may need repair. A deck pro can inspect your framing to confirm it meets load-bearing requirements.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
