"Late March 2020, our dogs informed us something was in one of chimney flues, we have three. Usually chimney swifts nested there in the summer. This time it was different - a young raccoon, probably looking for swift eggs. After extracting the raccoon, it became evident that we need flue caps to prevent critters from entering the flue. Researched chimney specialists. Called Travis regarding the critter problem. He scheduled and appointment for next afternoon. A crew of two came at the appointed time, looked over the situation, and determined that the three flues were spaced too close together to accommodate an individual flue cap for each flue. A single overall chimney cover was needed. The crew improvised temporary coverings and took measurements for a large cover which would need to be custom manufactured. Next day Travis sent an estimate for custom cap. With estimate approval the cap was ordered from a supplier. It took about five weeks for the custom cap to come in. The installation was scheduled for a Friday. Then Thursday Travis called with an opening that afternoon. The crew arrived Thursday afternoon, and quickly removed the temporary coverings and installed the custom cap. The price of the installation was the estimated price. And that final price included the work for the temporary coverings. No payment was required until the final installation of the custom cap, which was nice. Now the flues are raccoon safe. Kind of miss the chimney swifts though. Bottom line: The crew came when scheduled. They called prior to arriving to verify the appointment. The final cost matched the estimate. The Reece's crew inspected the flues and provided good information about their condition and various options available."

"The project went really well. The price wasn't the cheapest, but wasn't the most expensive estimate I received. Using 8 tons of heavy steps, the crew laid a beautiful walk and steps from our driveway to the bottom of our yard. Then they installed a planting bed and mulched it all. They worked by hand on a hillside for over 3 days. It looks really great, and I know we will enjoy it for years."

Fire Pit Installation questions, answered by experts

If your hardwired smoke alarm keeps going off, it could be because the backup battery needs replacing. When replacing the battery doesn’t stop your smoke alarm from beeping, try holding the reset button for 15 to 30 seconds or removing dust from the openings in the alarm. If it continues to chirp, it could be faulty and require replacement.

Although no heating appliance can be entirely risk-free, a fireplace insert is considered a safer alternative to a traditional open fireplace, thanks to their enclosed design. With a sealed combustion chamber, a fireplace insert effectively reduces the risk of sparks and embers escaping into the room, minimizing the chance of an accidental fire.

Additionally, an insert comes equipped with various safety features, such as tempered glass doors that create a barrier between the flames and the surrounding space. This enhances both safety and energy efficiency by preventing heat loss. As an added bonus, many inserts are designed to meet strict safety standards that ensure proper ventilation and combustion.

Yes, fire extinguishers eventually expire. However, the good news is that a properly stored fire extinguisher can last a decade or longer. They don’t have an expiration date on the canister, but you can check the manufacturing date on the “UL” nameplate near the classification information. Maintenance will also give your fire extinguisher longevity. Check the gauge at the top of the extinguisher every month. You'll want to make sure the gauge needle is in the green section, and if a hose or nozzle has been used or damaged, you need to replace it.

You should have either an ABC or K-rated fire extinguisher in the kitchen. ABC fire extinguishers put out wood, trash, paper, plastic, and textile fires along with grease, oil, gas, kerosene, and electrical fires. A class K fire extinguisher is specifically rated for use in the kitchen and is designed to extinguish combustible cooking materials, including grease and fat.

Yes, a hot or overheating outlet is a fire hazard and can cause a fire. An outlet becoming hot indicates an electrical problem, such as an overloaded circuit, loose connections, or a faulty component. The heat from these issues can ignite nearby flammable materials like curtains or furniture. If you notice an outlet is hot to the touch, turn off the power at the circuit breaker, unplug any connected devices, and consult a qualified electrician. If a fire does start, use a Class C fire extinguisher or baking soda to suppress it, or evacuate immediately and call the fire department.
