At 828 Landscaping, we are a quality-driven business based in Western North Carolina, specializing in grading, landscaping, and a comprehensive range of outdoor services. Our team is dedicated to enhancing the beauty and functionality of your property, turning your outdoor space into a dream view.

"I’ve had difficulty finding someone to make repairs to my existing irrigation system. Everyone wants to install but not do repairs when a valve breaks or head needs replaced or there is a leak - seems to be a real shortage in the Hickory region of people who will do irrigation repairs. That was my problem until we found Austin with 828 Landscape. He is professional, a good communicator and is totally about finding the problem and fixing it. I almost hesitate to post this review because then he’ll get too busy to work on my system when I need him."

Groundhog Grading can handle a wide range of tasks. We specialize in gravel driveways for new construction AND ongoing maintenance. Erosion and water drainage solutions from French drains to complete reslope and precision grading. Land clearing and site prep for new construction. Bush hog AND finish mowing. Storm damage cleanup. Large tree work. Concrete cutting and demo. Firewood sales AND delivery. Retaining walls and MORE lol.. We are a family-owned small business. Friendly, knowledgeable, we treat you how we would want to be treated.

"We chose this company because of the reviews. Paid over $11,000 and still ended up with unfinished grading, high-risk tree work, cleanup, seeding, etc. The contractor repeatedly tried to change the scope, made multiple FAILED ATTEMPTS to UP-CHARGE for work already included, and consistently failed to follow through. We hired him in early October 2025 and gave him a Thanksgiving deadline, which he agreed to. When he thought we hadn?t fully moved onto the property, he never showed up?our security cameras confirmed no activity. He later admitted he only ?sparingly? put seeds down, which was shocking. He blamed weather, then claimed his tools were being borrowed. He even said giving him a deadline was ?rude.? Had he said he couldn?t commit, we never would have paid him. Unreliable, unprofessional, and deceitful. At the end of the day, he got paid for work he had no intention of completing. That?s the bottom line!"

My name is Dylan Simpson. I am working everyday to grow and build my small grading business Diggin Deeper. I have 10 years experience in the field, 8 of that being commercial work with the remainder being residential. I can do anything dirt whether it is clearing for a house site, cutting in a road, laying pipe, and anything else you can think of. At the moment my schedule is not to crazy and can get someone in quick. Thank you for your time! God bless!

Gravel Driveway Repair questions, answered by experts

Though they may look similar, tar and bitumen come from different sources. Bitumen is a petroleum product—extracted during crude oil refining—and is mostly made up of hydrocarbons. Tar comes from burning down organic materials like coal or wood. Bitumen is strictly oil-based, while tar is a mix of compounds from natural sources. Both are used as binders in paving; however, bitumen is the standard for today’s asphalt. Tar use has mostly faded out of road construction.

Hot-pour sealants have an asphalt cement base that might also include rubber and other materials to allow the seal to flex in hot or cold temperatures. Asphalt emulsion sealants are not heated but are liquid applications that use water and an emulsifying agent to allow the asphalt and water to mix.

Instead of a set number of types, asphalt comes in variations designed for different needs. Some are categorized by temperature—hot mix, warm mix, and cold mix. Others are sorted by composition, like dense-graded, gap-graded (such as Stone Matrix Asphalt), porous, and mastic asphalt. There are also modified versions with added compounds like polymers, rubber, or emulsions. Instead of focusing on a number, it may be more useful to understand how contractors customize asphalt for durability, climate, and traffic conditions.

There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.

Asphalt dries and cures best between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. This range allows moisture to evaporate quickly without causing the asphalt to cool too fast, which can negatively affect the drying process. However, keep in mind that other weather conditions can also affect curing and drying times, such as precipitation and humidity.
