"Superior in All Respects - responsive, punctual, safe, fast, professional, and reasonably priced. We needed to prep our sloping home site for construction of a house by having a mix of live and dead trees dropped in addition to clearing a large area of many saplings that had sprouted from when the site was initially graded many years ago. The job was made more difficult by the presence of a large travel trailer and a shed, both of which needed to be avoided when dropping and processing the trees. The Hamby crews spent two days expertly dropping the trees, cutting them up, hauling them off, chipping the smaller-diameter trunks, limbs, and bundles of brush we had accumulated, cleaning up, and leaving us a nice pile of mulch for gardening. These guys were absolutely wonderful. They showed up on time; maintained good contact; worked fast, hard, and safely; could not have been more attentive to minimizing damage to near-by shrubs and trees, and were at all times courteous and pleasant to deal with. We will definitely call them for additional work when it is needed. Outstanding company!!"

Customers say: Quality work

"We recently had a healthcare emergency during the major ice storm last week and required ambulance services. McManus Landscaping has always been reliable, been there when you need them, preforms quality work in our neighborhood, however, it was when we really needed the roads clear with this event that McManus Landscaping was there when needed! We were able to get through the neighborhood to a major state road without any problems! Dave McManus has been working in this area for many years, his services are first rate with quality work at a reasonable price. There is really no one else we would recommend for landscaping services than Dave McManus!"

Customers say: Quick response

"I liked Scott from his first communication. He wanted to drive by and see the job prior to quoting a price. Others guessed and were all over the board. I knew what to expect after his drive by. Once hired he was very responsive when I had questions and did not hesitate to reach out when he had questions. Communication was solid. If I wasn’t home for any part of the project, he sent me pictures of his completed work. When it turned out to be a longer job than anticipated he kept to his estimate. I voluntarily paid him more, however he showed great integrity by saying he would stick to his estimate. I am impressed with his honesty and desire to do a great job. I would not hesitate to hire him again."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

The best landscaping for a septic drain field is shallow-rooted grass or native vegetation that helps prevent soil erosion while allowing water to evaporate efficiently. Avoid planting trees, shrubs, or deep-rooted plants near the drain field because the roots can infiltrate pipes and cause blockages. Using mulch or gravel sparingly can also help retain moisture and protect the system without restricting airflow.

You should exercise care when deciding how to landscape over a leach field for your septic system. You typically want lightweight materials that won’t damage the drain field’s perforated pipes. When adding plants to the area, select plants with shallow roots, such as grass or flower gardens. Trees with deep roots could damage the pipes in the field.

Finding a reputable greenhouse or nursery should start online, where you can read through customer reviews to gauge the quality of the plants sold and the customer experience. Look out for customers complaining about plants dying shortly after purchase, and try to choose a greenhouse known for hiring employees who are able to explain how to care for the plants you purchase. It’s also a good idea to head to a few greenhouses to see the selection they offer and make sure they carry the plants or trees you’re looking for.

Most experts recommend a quarter-inch layer of compost for best results, and you will need about .77 cubic yards of material per 1,000 square feet. To measure how much compost to use, take the square footage of your yard and multiply it by .77, then divide that number by 1,000.

The condition and appearance of your yard can affect your home appraisal value. A well-maintained, attractive yard with curb appeal adds to a property’s value, while an overgrown, messy, poorly maintained yard can hurt your home’s appraisal. Even small cosmetic improvements to your yard, like adding mulch, trimming trees, and cleaning out plant beds, can help your appraisal value.
