"The owner Lee is the one who did all of the cutting. He is very knowledgeable, efficient, safety was very noticeable, speed and quality of getting the job done AS DISCUSSED was right on the money of exactly what was agreed upon. I highly recommend him to anyone in the piedmont triad area to hire him for any of their tree work. I have already received another quote for him to come back and drop a couple more trees. He is that good. BEST QUOTE, yet HIGH QUALITY work!!!"

"Their communication skills were top-notch--they clearly stated what they could do for me, what they strongly advised against (tree topping), explained their decisions and delivered in everything (and then some). - clearly explained what trees needed trimmed up, why, and what ones even needed removed - proceeded to trim accordingly, removed the two poor trees, and even trimmed one down to desired specifications to be used as a part of a fence - even swept off my roof from debris from their cutting--and even cleared some moss that was up there Exceptional service, highly recommended, 5/5 all around!"

Customers say: True professional

"Josh cut a HUGE oak, an old maple, and trimmed limbs off an even larger poplar tree for us. First he came and gave us a free estimate and an approximate date. When he arrived, he did a great job! He was true to his estimate, and even came back to cut some of the larger pieces of trunk for us to make it more manageable. We wholeheartedly recommend Phipps Tree Service and will definitely use them again the next time!"

"From time of initial contact, Cheap Jimm was here with equipment in less than an hour. His pricing was better than I expected and he could start right away. I never thought I could have the job finished the same day I called for qualified names. I would gladly recommend Cheap Jimm for his pricing and professional work ."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Most plum trees are pruned into a vase or open wine glass shape. They’ll have a shorter central leader (the trunk) that supports three to four main branches. Of course, this isn't always the case. If you have a European plum tree, you can grow it in a pyramid shape. Let the central leader extend the length of the tree and prune smaller branches to create the pyramid.

Some trees, such as silver maples, birches, sycamores, and scotch pines, shed their bark naturally. If your tree is not one that does this, it might have fallen prey to pests, fungi, or diseases. It could also simply be suffering from an extreme weather change, such as a snowstorm or heat wave. If you’re still stumped, consulting with a pro can help you diagnose your tree’s specific problem.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

A grafted tree is a tree grown by combining two trees. It takes expertise. Branches from grafted trees don’t grow strong roots. Save yourself the time and frustration by having an arborist help you with this advanced project.

You can often tell if a tree is grafted because it will have a noticeable line. Above the line, the bark will look different than it does below the line. It’s most common with fruit trees.

Yes, tree roots can regenerate after they’re pruned or cut. In fact, trimming can stimulate new growth, especially in healthy trees. The tree’s roots can still grow back even after a tree is cut down, (and learning how to get rid of regrowing tree roots is a separate feat). Still, if you don’t wish to harm a tree, pruning the roots should be done with extreme care, and ideally by a professional.
