"My home has a chimney that was unsafe to use (cracked masonry liner). I dreaded the time and cost of a tear down and replacement. I contacted "Shamrock Chimney" and scheduled an appointment with their lead technician "Tony". He suggested a less costly and safer alternative (steel liner and a resealing of the outer brickwork. The work was performed over a two-day period. I am fully satisfied with the results. One thing I really apricate is the communication during the project. The "front office" would let me know by either phone or email when the project would start, and then Tony and would give me updates. All and all the whole process went smoothly. Also, this was my first time with "Angi", I hope to use their services again in the future."

"Jim charged us for the visit because the pitch of our roof is very steep (it's a dangerous roof to climb). If work would have been done, he said we could apply half of that cost to the work. However, when Jim inspected the chimney from the roof and attic, he found an even bigger problem than we anticipated. He said there was a liner for our downstairs furnace -- but that the upstairs furnace was connected to the chimney with no liner and because of a metal plate at the top of the chimney around the liner had been completely blocked off, with nowhere for the furnace exhaust to escape. Obviously a very dangerous situation -- so we are so grateful he found it. He suggested that we contact the people responsible for this and insist they fix the problem. We can't thank Jim enough for finding this problem. We would definitely call him again for future services."

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts

The cost for fire or smoke damage restoration services typically ranges from $3,000 to $50,000. The final price depends on the severity and extent of the damage and the specific areas affected.

Yes, most insurance plans cover acts of nature. In policy documents, this also may be called “Acts of God” or “natural disasters.” However, not all acts of nature are covered by your policy, and the extent to which they’re covered depends on your specific contract. Check your policy documents to understand your coverage limits and exclusions.

The timeline for smoke damage remediation can range from a single day to several months, depending on the extent of the damage, the size of the affected area, and the methods used. For minor damage, such as removing cigarette smoke odors from a single room, the process might take only one to two days and typically involves deep cleaning, painting, and sealing walls. Some methods, like ozone treatments, can take 24 to 48 hours, though multiple treatments may be necessary. More extensive smoke damage, such as from a house fire, can take three weeks or longer to clean and treat. If significant material restoration or replacement is needed, the timeline can extend to six to 12 months. A smoke damage restoration professional can provide a more accurate estimate for your specific situation.

Neglecting to clean your chimney can lead to serious safety hazards. A primary risk is the buildup of creosote, a highly flammable substance that can ignite and cause a dangerous chimney fire. This buildup can also create blockages in the flue, resulting in poor venting of smoke, soot, and toxic gases like carbon monoxide, which can then enter your home and create dangerously poor indoor air quality. Additionally, creosote is acidic and can damage the chimney's mortar and metal components over time, potentially allowing smoke to leak into your house. To prevent these issues, it is essential to schedule an annual chimney cleaning with a professional.

Yes, mineral spirits are flammable and may spontaneously combust at temperatures of 200 degrees F or more. Storing them in well-ventilated spaces and disposing of them the proper way are the best ways to prevent mineral spirits or anything contaminated with them, like towels and rags, from going up in smoke.
