"After Tropical Storm Helene took down a large tree which took down my Duke Energy power line on side of my home, Chris came and worked 2 full days and got all the electrical service back up and running, They also were sooooo helpful with our 2 year old Generac backup generator which we have had issues with and will soon be returning to address our generator issues. The Field Supervisor, Brandon, went above and beyond by calling Generac and explaining our generator issues. Mister Sparky will from now on be our maintenance contractor after our last one failed us when we really needed them. It was a stressful 8 days without power and using a generator that was leaking oil and not knowing if or when it might blow -up. All the guys at Mister Sparky who came by and helped were professional and truly cared about taking care of us. I will forever Trust and Appreciate Mr Sparky for all my electrical needs."

"If you need electrical work done, please call J. N. Green Electrical. We started off by calling several companies out to our house to fix what we thought was a minor electrical problem. After three different electricians came out and three different bills, with nothing fixed, we found J.N. Green Electrical on Angie List. We were skeptical at first but said, Let give it a try. Green Electrical was out at our house that same day and was able to fix the problem in no time. They were very professional and charged me less than the other three companies that did not fix the problem. I would definitely recommend them to anyone! They have been our go-to guys ever since!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

A 10,000-watt generator can run a small to mid-sized central AC unit (typically up to 3 tons or 36,000 BTU) along with a few other appliances. However, larger AC units or additional loads will require a bigger generator. Consult a local generator installer to ensure you add the correct size generator to your home.

If you’re wondering if you can use your electric vehicle as a backup battery, it depends on whether your EV is compatible with bidirectional charging. This technology allows energy to flow both ways, enabling vehicle-to-home (V2H) backup power, vehicle-to-load (V2L) for appliances and camping, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) to support the power grid. Compatible EVs convert stored DC energy into usable AC power, helping reduce energy costs and enhance grid stability while providing emergency backup power.

Yes, natural gas generators can work without electricity. Natural gas generators are a common type of backup or whole-house generator that operates when the electrical grid isn’t working. The trick is using a transfer switch (which usually needs to be installed with the generator) that safely switches the home electrical system from the power grid to generator power when needed.

To power a central air system during a power outage, the whole-house generator will need to be at least 5,000 watts, and this number will significantly increase for larger units. Check the specific wattage requirements of your AC unit to choose the right generator size. Consider consulting a generator installer to ensure your whole-house generator meets your electrical load needs.

Generators are safe to use as long as they are installed and operated correctly according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The most critical safety tips are to never use a portable or fuel-powered generator inside an enclosed space due to the risk of lethal carbon monoxide poisoning; always operate it outdoors where fumes can dissipate away from your home. Additionally, never attempt to connect a generator to your home’s electrical panel yourself—hire a professional to ensure the setup meets safety standards. Finally, avoid overloading the generator by not connecting more appliances than it is rated for, as this can damage your equipment or cause a fire.
