"I had Cape Fear come out for a second opinion because the company my home warranty company sent out was a joke (Comfort Wizards by the way). It was night and day difference with Cape Fear. Eddie(?) truly checked every part of the A/C unit, both in the attic and outside. He was very nice and patient with me watching and asking questions. I eventually decided to just get a new heater and A/C unit and got 5 or 6 different quotes. Cape Fear was tied for the lowest price. I normally go with the middle price quotes, but I was so impressed with the inspection and service provided by Cape Fear that I decided to go with them. The two men that replaced my unit were pretty young, which worried me a little, but it's been 3 weeks and I'm very happy with how everything is running so far."

"Never returned three calls after leaving message on 11/11/2013, 11/13/2013, and 11/21/2013, that we needed either a new hot water heater or tankless hot water system installed.

Update: return phone call on 11/22/2013-- see note above. This resulted in a change to my evaluation from F to C overall.

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Any item that can hold on to moisture and encourage mold growth should be discarded and replaced following water damage. Upholstered items, such as armchairs and couches, and soft items, such as mattresses, usually must be thrown away once they've taken on a lot of water. Soft furniture is difficult to dry out, creating an inviting environment for mold.

You may also need to replace hardwood furniture following water damage if you're unable to fully dry it out. If you have appliances and electronics that have been fully submerged in water, particularly sewage, you'll need to replace those, too.

A larger heater requires a larger breaker—unless there’s one already installed. The longer answer to this question is more nuanced. Do you place demands on the heater at the same time as running other heavy-duty appliances like ovens and washing machines? Do you live in an older home that may not have considered the higher electrical demands we have now? Breakers need to be sized at 125% of the load. To find that load, you should call a local electrical pro.

If your water heater is about to celebrate the big 2-0, you may want to consider sending it off to greener pastures. While the water heater may seem to be working well, any conventional, tanked water heater over 10 years of age is at risk of failure. If your water heater is 20 years or older, your best move is to replace your aging heater before it completely breaks down.

In most municipalities, a license is not mandatory for water heater installation or replacement. However, we strongly recommend hiring a licensed plumber or water heater installer to handle the work. Licensed installers are far less likely to make a mistake during the installation, which means paying for the experience decreases your risk of a leak and other issues. You can use our state licensing tool to find out if a contractor you’re considering in your area holds a plumber’s license.

Due to the high temperature, using stainless steel vent pipes for your tankless water heater’s exhaust vent is best. Also, it is safe to use a flexible vent duct as the exhaust fan. If installing the exhaust fan yourself, make sure you are using heat-resistant silicon to connect the exhaust vent and the duct on your water heater.
