"We just recently purchased our first home and had discovered pretty high levels of radon when doing the home inspection. I did my research and spoke with several other companies before deciding to hire Affordable Radon, and I'm quite pleased with our choice! The radon mitigation system was installed by Brandon, who was very friendly, professional, and more than willing to explain everything to us about what was happening at any point in the process. Our re-test kit came back higher than we'd like (still a huge improvement from before the system was installed though), so Brandon was back out today to honor to guarantee Affordable Radon has by moving to the next phase in the mitigation process. I have been nothing but satisfied with the company, and specifically Brandon's work. We have had alot on our plates with home renovations and it is such a relief to know that we can rely on a local company to stand by their word. Looking forward to seeing our results after the next re-test, and though I hope not to have to call Brandon back out for further mitigation, I sure am happy to know that these guys are more than willing to go the extra mile to make sure my home is safe."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

The fan that pulls the radon out of the air needs to run continuously, so you may see an increase in your electric bill once you install the mitigation system. Additionally, you may see an increase in your heating or cooling bills, as the fan can cause some loss of hot or cool air.

Radon is present almost everywhere but, like sunlight, the concentration levels and how often you are exposed to it have a large part to play in just how dangerous it is. There are levels of radon that are acceptable inside a house, but above a certain limit, radon becomes a serious radioactive hazard that is a known cause of lung cancer. In fact, radon exposure is the number two leading cause of lung cancer (after smoking).

While DIY testing is possible, abatement generally requires professional installation to ensure efficacy and meet safety standards.

No, radon mitigation systems do not decrease home value or make a home harder to sell. In areas where homes experience similar radon exposure risks, a radon mitigation system is viewed as an improvement. Potential homebuyers often opt to buy a home with a radon mitigation system already installed to reduce the risk of cancer for their families.

The natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water can cause radon to appear in a home. The gas seeps into homes through cracks in foundations, walls, or floors, as well as through gaps around pipes or construction joints. Radon levels are influenced by soil composition, building materials, and ventilation. Poorly sealed or airtight homes can trap radon, allowing it to accumulate.
