"After several months of trying to hire someone to do our vinyl siding job with no success, I called Affordable Home Improvement. Mr. Deweese came to our house two days later (on a Saturday in the pouring rain) and gave us an estimate. Aaron and his crew began work the next week and were done in about 5 days. Our house looks great, the price was right, and I am very thankful that I called This professional and courteous company to do our home improvement."

"We hired Jon McCoy because of the outstanding work he did at my son's home. We had a leak in our back porch ceiling and discovered it was coming from our chimney. Since we had to replace the ceiling, we decided to replace it with vinyl siding. We also decided to have vinyl siding put up on our front porch ceiling. The work was excellent and was finished on time. Jon McCoy is a man of his word. He returns calls promptly and always arrives on time. His work is excellent, and we will continue to use him in the future. I would recommend him to anyone."

"I highly recommend Wilson Construction Company. Mike Wilson and his crew were easy to work with from the very first day they arrived on the job. They were knowledgeable and professional in completing the job they did for me. They arrived when they said they would and did what Mike said he would do. I was completely satisfied with their work. We made a few changes as the work progressed and they cooperated without hesitation to make the changes. Mike priced the job at a fair rate. Both my wife and I are happy with the work done on our home!!! Excellent job!!!"

Siding questions, answered by experts

Traditionally, you place a layer of ⅜-inch foam board beneath aluminum siding. This gives you a smooth surface to which you can fasten the trim and siding. Beneath the foam board, you should have some kind of waterproof sheathing to further protect your home from water damage. It’s possible this sheathing is already under your current siding.

You should restain or refinish your home's cedar siding every three to seven years to maintain its appearance and ensure maximum protection. The precise frequency depends on several factors, including your local climate, the siding's exposure to severe weather like direct sunlight, rain, and wind, the quality of the initial stain application, the type of stain used, and the condition of the wood.

Homeowners in harsh climates with high humidity and significant direct sunlight should plan on restaining every three years, while those in milder locations can wait up to seven years. For the longest-lasting protection in particularly harsh environments, consider using an opaque stain.

If you're looking for a lower-maintenance alternative, vinyl or aluminum siding are options to consider. Although their installation cost may be higher, they don't require as much upkeep over time, which can provide more value, especially in areas with excessive rainfall or high humidity.

Engineered wood siding is still a relatively new type of siding, so it’s hard to say with certainty how long engineered wood siding will last. That said, homeowners should expect to get somewhere from 20 to 30 years out of their engineered wood siding, especially if they keep up with maintenance, including painting it every 10 years. Painting the exterior of a house costs an average of $3,150.

The lifespan of siding ranges from 20 to over 100 years, depending heavily on the material, climate, quality of installation, and maintenance.

  • Vinyl, Wood, and Aluminum: Typically last 20 to 40 years. Engineered wood may need replacement after just 20 years.

  • Fiber Cement: Lasts around 50 years.

  • Brick and Stone: These are the most durable, lasting for a century or more with proper care.

The longevity of any siding can be shortened if it's not properly maintained or if damage is not repaired promptly. Regular cleaning is vital. It's time for a replacement when you see widespread damage, signs of water intrusion, or a spike in energy costs.

Insulated vinyl siding costs about twice as much as the cheapest form of vinyl siding, but it’s still more affordable than other types of siding, including fiber cement, wood, stone, and brick. You get a lot of bang for your buck with vinyl siding; it’s durable, it’s available in a wide range of styles and colors, and it helps lower your energy bills.
