"I hired them to do my deck and they did a great job. I tried to hire them for two other jobs but they gave me the run around about the estimate. They said they would send somebody out and never did, multiple times. I never could schedule with them, so I let go. I won't call them again."

"We knew that we had to have new gutters for the last few years and have just put it off. Realizing that the problem was only getting worse and could start to affect the foundation, we called and got bids from four different companies. Artisan was not the cheapest and definitely not the most expensive. From all the questions we where asking they where providing the same materials and putting them onto the house in the same manner as the next two higher bids but came in under their bids by $700 and $1200. Once I called Matt and accepted his bid he told me that he could have me on the schedule within 8 days, which was fine by us. Four days later he called and explained that they had a job put on hold and would we like them to come out the next day and get the job done. We told them sure, and the next day the crew was out bright and early and got the job done in a timely manner. When they where finished they came to the door and took my wife on a walk through of the job. She pointed out one thing that she didn't like how it looked and they took care of it immediately to her satisfaction. The next day, I saw where they had put on the fascia, and was not totally pleased with how it looked. I called Matt and the next day he was out to look at it with me and saw the angle that I was looking at it and agreed that it could be done better, and they had it done that day. I appreciate that they where willing to complete the job to our satisfaction down to the little things. If you need guttering done, this is a great company to call and work with. The neighbors have even commented on how much nicer it makes the house look. We had our first big rain the other night and did not have any of the leaking problems we where starting to see, so it was a good investment."

"I had gutter failure from huge storm in KC area last weekend, which caused water to pool in front of a basement window well and led to my basement flooding. I tried calling many other gutter companies, but they all were 2-3 weeks or 2-3 months booked out. the owner of 5 Star construction came out to give a bid, and immediately said that he would take one of is crews off another project to immediately address put up the new gutters so as to avoid further flooding into my basement. He said my situation was way more urgent than his other customers. He had a crew out the very next day to put up the new 6" gutters with splash guards, and addressing some of the other minor siding repairs."

"I had that pesky green moss/mildew growing on the north side of my house and oil stains in the driveway. Tried and failed to remove them myself. Hired this outfit and, like fairy magic, all of the green stuff, gone! All but the most stubborn oil stains, gone! 100% improvements. Concrete was WHITE! ONLY $475 and no need now to repaint my house. Wow! What a bargain! Would hire again!"

"Recently I saw people at my neighbor's house cleaning out her gutters and then later washing her windows. When I mentioned it, she told me that she periodically hires one or two laborers from this firm for a few hours. I called and asked about getting my deck power washed and stained. The company said they had a contracting business that could give me a "turn-key" (all-inclusive) price but that, if I wanted to attend to the other aspects myself, they could sell me just the labor. I asked for prices both ways. It took a little time to get the contract price. I ended up choosing to rent a power washer, buy my own stain and brushes and hire workers. I saved over $250, against the contract price. The workers stayed busy and were efficient and courteous. I am very pleased with the appearance of my deck."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Floating decks are a cost-effective and versatile option, but they come with some compromises. Since they sit on smaller footings instead of being deeply anchored, they’re more likely to shift over time, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or freeze-thaw conditions. Their low-to-the-ground design makes them more susceptible to moisture buildup and potential water damage.

Yes. Freestanding or floating decks are exactly what the name implies—structures with their own support beams. You can build a deck yourself and place it next to a house for the illusion of a connected deck without the hassle. Or you can construct it in a separate part of your yard for a dedicated outdoor entertainment space. For the purpose of removing a freestanding deck, the steps are the same as an attached deck, but you don’t have to cut the deck away from the home.

Both deck footings and deck posts help prop up your deck. However, footings are the bottommost parts of a deck that touch the ground. They’re usually made of concrete. Posts are pieces of wood that attach to the top of the footings with brackets. They run upwards and connect to the underside of your deck to support its weight.

Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.

Yes, an elevated deck can increase a home's resale value. Homeowners can expect a 65% return on investment from the cost of a second-story deck installation. For example, if you spend $5,000 to install a second-story deck, that deck will add $3,250 to the value of your home.
