"I would HIGHLY recommend Midwest Radon.  Everyone we came in contact with at this company was so professional, so polite and so friendly.  From the time I contacted Wes till the time the installers left, everyone was done with complete professionalism.  On top of that, I have a HIGH confidence that the radon issue at my home has been rectified.

"I found the experience, from the on-site quote, the explanation of services during the on-site quote, the ease of provision of all requested details before acceptance (including licensing information), the accuracy of what I was provided, contacting me to confirm go-ahead, the quality of work, the timeliness of work completion and cleanup (well inside the anticipated time window etr 3 hours, actual about 1.5 hours), the finished system solidity and finish, and the post-work explanation of what to expect, details about the system's operation, and the overnight radon monitor testing to be fantastic. I also very much liked that there was a range of payment methods, and as I opted for credit card, the payment process was simple and came to my email for me to review and pay. I had 20+ pCi/L in my basement (verified by my own testing apparatus) before work, and overnight I was down to 1 pCI/L. I felt the quote was competitive based on information sourced online prior to my consideration of the company. John Woods from Radon Mitigation Masters did an excellent job at each stage, and I would thoroughly recommend him and his company to anyone in the area needing Radon mitigation."

"I would definitely recommend this company to anyone!!! I hired them and the job was done nicely, Dan O'Brien was the technician who took care of the project and he did an excellent job, he answered all of my questions and explained to me everything related to Radon gas. When he finished setting everything up and the job was completed all the working area looked super clean and the installation looks just like it is part of the house and that has been there forever. This is what I call a Perfect and Complete execution of a Radon gas mitigation project."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of a radon mitigation system depends on the type of system and its maintenance. With proper care, a system can last for many decades. Passive systems tend to last longer as they have fewer components that require replacement. Active systems, which have more moving parts like fans, generally have a shorter lifespan. For instance, water filtration devices and active pressurization systems require more frequent maintenance. While the system as a whole is durable, the radon fan in an active system typically has a lifespan of 5 to 10 years and will need to be replaced. As long as the fan is working, the mitigation system should function correctly.

Radon enters your home when warm air begins to rise and exits through the roof, creating a vacuum that pulls cooler air from under the foundation. Part of that air is radon, which is an invisible, odorless gas that develops naturally when radioactive particles are deep within the ground. Those particles usually come from decaying matter in soil and rocks.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to remediate radon yourself. While a radon reduction professional can make the biggest impact in your home, you can make efforts to improve radon levels on your own by sealing cracks, increasing ventilation, and testing for radon regularly.

No level of radon is technically safe, but since it is naturally present everywhere, it is impossible to avoid entirely. The average radon level in homes across the United States is 1.3 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends taking action to reduce radon levels if your home's test results are between 2 and 4 pCi/L or higher.

Keeping radon from getting into your home is much better than having to get rid of it once it's already indoors. While there may not be a way to fully prevent radon from getting into your home, there are things you can do to reduce the gas's ability to enter.

Sealing foundation cracks and openings can help keep the gas from seeping inside. Improving air flow, such as by opening windows, can also be helpful. If you're building your home from scratch, talk to your contractor about using radon-resistant construction to keep the gas out.
