A bathroom fan lasts between five and ten years, depending on its quality, how it’s installed, and how often you use it. If you notice your fan is no longer working as well as it once did, consider replacing it before it stops working altogether. Installing a bathroom fan costs between $240 and $550.

Not all exhaust fans need venting, but most do. Bathroom fans and range hoods work best when vented outside to remove moisture, odors, and pollutants. Some ductless range hoods use filters instead, but they don’t remove air—just recirculate it. Proper venting ensures better air quality and efficiency.

You’ll find the backdraft damper near the top of the range hood (where it connects to the ductwork). However, some range hoods also have a second damper, which is located close to the roof or exterior wall where the ductwork ends. Steeper roofs may need larger fans or about 840 CFM.  You can figure the size of attic fan you need by multiplying the square footage of your attic floor by 0.7. (multiply by 1.2 for a steep roof and 1.15 for a dark roof). That number is the CFM required for your fan to run efficiently.
