Home Performance Group is a mechanical, electrical, and plumbing firm providing service and maintenance for residential Heating and Cooling, Electrical and Plumbing systems, as well as appliance service and general mechanical repair for homes. Our installation team specializes in design, engineering and installation of cutting edge green technologies such as ground-source heat pumps, heated floors, PV solar arrays and much more.

"My June experience 2021 with Home Performance Group (HPG) was nothing less than remarkable. It began when Patrick came to my house to do a consultation regarding my 21-year-old air conditioner and furnace. Unlike any of the previous 3 companies that had stopped by, Patrick spent a fair amount of time measuring the entire house, to include every window, and he explained that these measurements help determine which system would be best suited for my house. When it came time to pick the system, he presented me with 4 options and did not try to “hard-sell” me on any of them. Rather, he showed me to pros and cons and while he made his own recommendation, it was up to me to decide. I ended up going with his recommendation anyway. He provided me with extensive documentation regarding the Carrier system I selected. Come installation day, Nick and George arrived with my air conditioner, coil, and furnace and even though it was pouring down rain, they went right to work, removing all the old equipment first and then installing the new equipment. I don’t even think they stopped to take lunch or a break. By the end of the day, I had a full operational system with everything up in running. In fact, they managed to tie my existing, manual controlled humidifier to the new system, something I wasn’t aware was possible, but they pulled it off. Both Nick and George were professionals and went out of their way to make sure no mud was tracked into the house. When it was time for them to leave, nothing was left behind for me to dispose of. The system I now have is so quiet, I honestly can’t tell it is running, besides the fact that the temp in the house is where is should be. My old system was so noisy I could hear it turn on from my 2nd floor bedroom. With the new carrier air conditioner, you could be standing next to it and not know if it was on or off. Also, I am afforded rebates from Carrier and Patrick had them submitted the day the work was completed. I already received an email from Carrier indicating my rebates were being processed. If you are considering this kind of work for a new air conditioner and/or furnace, I highly recommend calling Home Performance Group and get a consultation with Patrick lined up."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

For more complex electrical projects, it’s often most efficient and cost-effective to hire an electrician rather than trying to figure it out yourself (and risking electrical problems). Electricians know exactly what a project requires, and can often find supplies or parts for cheaper than the average homeowner. That can save money compared to going it alone.

Unless you’re a licensed electrician with extensive experience in upgrading electric panels, you must hire a professional for any electrical work. A licensed electrician will make sure your breaker is upgraded safely and in compliance with local codes. Your pro will also take care of any permits and inspections that are needed.

An estimate for electrical work should include an estimated number and an estimated price to complete the work. An electrical estimate should also include a description of the services to be provided as well as the materials to be used, such as wiring, switches, panels, or other items, and the cost for those materials. If any tax is charged, that should appear on the estimate, too. Some estimates may include additional options that can be added to the base price of the quoted job if the customer chooses to go ahead with the add-ons.

Natural gas and electricity rates vary significantly based on location, and pricing can change over time, too. It’s possible that in locations where natural gas is particularly inexpensive, it will cost less than grid-based electricity will. However, you should also factor in the generator’s initial costs and maintenance needs, as well as its noise level and if it can comfortably power all your home appliances.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.
