"He was late every day, if he even showed up. Took 3 months to do a 3 week project and never did finish it. I had to have someone else come out and fix what Kocher couldn't after 5 separate attempts. His quality is pathetic. I have never laid tile before and I definitely could've done as good as his work looks. He cut tiles and left them on the wall with terrible touch up paint jobs and called it "art". I was less than impressed throughout this entire ordeal and wish I had never hired him or at the very least fired him way sooner than I did."

They smoothed and prepped the wall (plaster/lathe/wallpaper - difficult to work with) for me in areas not related to the lighting installation, knowing I’d be painting soon. Plaster is a pretty tough surface, but it can still sustain damage from things like bumping against it, water issues, dampness, extreme humidity changes, and plain old age. Most plaster walls last hundreds of years and will only be taken down to the base layer when major repairs are required. Being cautious around the wall, not placing furniture against it, and ensuring stable humidity are all great ways to reduce possible damage.

If the water damage is small, such as small patches, you can paint over the area. To prevent mold growth, roll on a coat of an antifungal primer beforehand painting. However, if the damage is more extensive, you may have mold, and the plaster will be compromised. You’ll have to replace the plasterboard.

If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.

Depending on the quality of the plaster and the moisture in the building, plaster can last over 100 years in some cases. It may develop cracks in some places, but many find it aesthetically appealing. As long as no structural damage affects the plaster and maintenance is being performed—mainly repairing small patches and addressing water damage—plaster can last a long time.
