"I am delighted with how things turned out.  The work on the tub itself was superb, it literally looks brand new. The new shower door is great too.  Bob worked with me to make sure that all of the little details were done right, and I was very happy to do business with him.  He was patient and easy to work with.  Highly recommended!

"Terry was very professional from the beginning to the end. He came out quickly and looked at the job and then got on it very fast. His schedule was very tight, but he fit me in after I told him my deadline. I would use Humes again and I will definitely be telling my neighbors to use Humes. He even went ahead and fixed something for me, bc he had a little extra material sitting there. ***** Five Stars!!! Thank you again."

"This is an older job, but since Angie's List requested feedback for this contractor and we had them accomplish a substantial amount of work (over $34,000) we figured this would be worth writing about.
Had a walk-through listening to what we wanted in the basement in Autumn 2009.  About 7 days later had an appointment where we had a computerized view of what they had designed for us.  Payment was very well spelled out - at different milestones, a percentage was paid.  Very professional and almost exactly what wife was looking for.  Perfectly followed their timetable...even dealing with finicky subcontractors for different aspects of the basement finish.  Clean-up every night was immaculate.  No complaints about the long-term quality of work except the dry-walling and shower area...where after 24 months, we noticed significant cracking in the drywall and separation of the paneling in the bathroom.  Tiling was good except around the sliding glass door, probably due to some water intrusion the grout is cracking.
Our house was built by Fulford.  We have many complaints about what we consider to be mediocre construction of the house (especially our lousy carpet laying), but the basement, especially the carpet seems to be of sound materials and worksmanship.  If we didn't have the issues in the bathroom with the panels and caulking, I'd probably have rated them close to straight "A"s."

Glass Block questions, answered by experts

Glass block installation can be relatively expensive due to the range of material costs and the labor time to assemble this type of specialty window. The process proceeds slowly as the glass does not absorb moisture from mortar and silicone caulk takes longer to harden, leaving spacers to hold up the structure until the caulk or mortar begins to cure. Plus, if your current windows have structural issues or damage, you’ll need to repair them before beginning the project, increasing your bottom line.

Glass block windows come in various patterns and styles that offer privacy and unique aesthetics. Frosted or textured glass diffuses light and enhances privacy. Wave-pattern glass blocks imitate ocean waves with flowing lines. Ice-glass blocks resemble cracked ice. Fluted glass blocks feature parallel vertical grooves, adding texture and depth. Clear glass blocks, similar to glass Coke bottles, offer transparency with some distortion and may have smooth surfaces or subtle textures, adding visual interest.

Heavy glass tends to be more expensive than thin glass because it is stronger and more durable. In most cases, ¼-inch-thick glass is ideal for mirrors, and ⅛-inch-thick glass is ideal for residential windows. Heavier glass isn’t always necessary, and can be more challenging to hang or install. Work with a local window installation pro for replacement or new construction windows.

DIY is possible for small projects, but professional installation ensures proper sealing, structural integrity, and a precise finish.

Installing glass block windows has benefits and disadvantages, as with most materials. The pros and cons can vary depending on the type of glass block and the window location.

Pros

  • Maintains privacy while letting light into the bathroom

  • Energy efficient

  • Sealed to prevent drafts

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Strong and secure

Cons

  • Costly to install

  • Challenging installation

  • Challenging repair
