"Midwest Tree Surgeons did a great job of removing a 60 year old sweet gum tree in our backyard. No damage was done to a chain link fence directly below one side, and they even relocated two, heavy, concrete bird baths until they were finished. The owner, Christian, is a licensed arborist and actually did all of the climbing. He even returned today, a Sunday, to remove chips left from the stump grinding. My only complaint was the ruts left in the lawn from their tractor tires. This company gave us the lowest bid, and I have already referred them to a friend."

"Marissa responded very quickly to my request for an estimate. She explained the work to be done to trim and shape 3 trees in my front yard. Marissa emailed me the morning of the day scheduled for the work me know they would arrive late because of an equipment problem at an earlier job. The crew did an excellent job of trimming the trees away from my house and checked with me to make sure I was satisfied. They thoroughly cleaned up all the branches and debris before they left. I've received compliments from neighbors on how the trees look now. I would not hesitate to call A&M Tree Services the next time I need an arborist. ."

"Ryan, the owner and his crew were efficient, pleasant and polite. We felt Ryan's knowledge as an arborist, helped us in knowing what to have done in this project. The company, aerated, seeded, trimmed trees, and placed sod. His quote for the work was reasonable."

"We bought our new home in Kirkwood knowing that the yard was a mess--multiple trees (red bud, magnolias, red oaks, persimmon) had been neglected for a long time and needed a lot of thinning and deadwooding.  Plus we had a large area (probably 35' x 10') of nightmare that needed to be cleared out--trees and shrubs overgrown with a gigantic hyacinth vine choking everything.  We asked our neighbors who they used because their yard is gorgeous, trees are beautifully trimmed -- they recommended MIke Baumann.  We scheduled with him and after his giving us a very fair bid, had him start on the yard.  He showed up early with a full crew and large equipment--there was no messing around, had his guys in the trees right away.  The job took 6 hours or so, and they went full blast the whole time.  When they left, the yard was cleaned of all debris, the grove of hyacinth overgrowth was totally bare (fantastic!).  We had a few stumps which were left behind, and MIke came out the following day to grind those down to below grade.  Overall we were very impressed with Mike and his crew--professional, timely, hard working.  I have given his name to a friend who is looking for someone to help with their HOA at their condo complex, as I think he'd do an amazing job.  We've had several compliments on the trees since the work, and one person who is an arborist said that the job done was top notch.  We will definitely work with Mike in the future!

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Aside from removing dead or diseased branches, you should prune your trees somewhere between every one and three years. Some people—particularly commercial farmers—prune their apple trees yearly to produce higher yields. This is the best way to promote tree health. That said, the average homeowner can get away with hard-pruning their mature apple tree every other year or every three years.

Unless it’s dead or dangerous, think twice about cutting down a tree in your yard. They’re good for health, well-being, wildlife, and the environment. Plus, local authorities often have regulations prohibiting the removal of trees, especially protected species or individual trees with historical value.

A tree growing close to a house can pose several risks, but removal isn't always the only or best solution. Potential problems include roots growing into the foundation and causing structural cracks, branches damaging the roof or promoting moss growth, and debris clogging gutters, which can lead to water damage. Trees can also provide access for pests and encourage mold. However, a small, healthy tree may not be a problem, and for larger, established trees, strategic trimming can be a cheaper and more beneficial alternative to removal. It is generally recommended to take action for trees within 10 to 20 feet of your home, especially if they are unhealthy or encroaching. Your best bet is to consult a professional arborist who can assess the specific situation and provide expert advice.

If it’s only a smaller branch that has died and you’re keeping an eye on the tree, it’s probably nothing to worry about. But if other nearby branches start dying off as well, or a very large branch dies, then you likely have a bigger problem. It’s time to watch for diseases and other problems and possibly get professional guidance on how to proceed.

Ideally, you should wait to prune until trees have gone dormant in late fall to early winter. The worst times to prune trees are early fall and late summer, as pruning them so close to dormancy makes it difficult for the tree recover before it goes dormant for the season.
