"The GIC team was very prompt and knowledgeable. They were very neat and cleaned up well after themselves. We had our attic insulated and foam sprayed on rim joist and basement crawlspace. We noticed the house to be much quieter immediately. So glad we had this done in January before the -22 degree temperatures hit. Can't wait to see the effect on summer air conditioning bills."

"From Taylor's consultation to the installers we were very pleased with this experience. They were respectful of our time and property. I was very comfortable having them in my home. Sometimes it is difficult to do a home improvement that doesn't have visual results. However, we are already very glad we made the energy upgrades. Even after a day there is a significant difference in the temperature in the upstairs of our home. Y'all are awesome. Thank you so much for improving our home!"

"We had 1 inch of insulation in our attic. Hired the fellas at Green Star Energy to blow in insulation throughout the whole attic. I felt a difference immediately once the project had been completed. Our ac is getting a much needed break."

"Working with Star Companies was a great experience — I liked the fact that they emphasized air sealing around necessary elements in the attic and other providers didn't necessarily focus on that improvement."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

The most energy-efficient windows are double—or triple-pane windows with low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings and gas fills between the panes. These windows reduce heat transfer, prevent drafts, and help maintain a consistent indoor temperature. But if replacing windows isn’t in your budget, pairing your existing windows with insulating window treatments can still make a noticeable difference in home comfort and monthly bills.

The best type of insulation for your home depends on your specific needs, climate, and the area you are insulating. For new construction, structural insulated panels are a highly energy-efficient option that is easy to install during the building process. In very warm climates, reflective insulation can be a cost-effective choice. For cold climates, fiberglass is an excellent option due to its high R-value and resistance to settling over time. Spray foam works well in humid environments because of its moisture-resistant properties. For standard attics, loose-fill, spray foam, or blown-in insulation are all suitable options.

Yes, cladding can help insulate your home by adding an additional layer to the exterior walls, which can minimize heat loss and enhance energy efficiency. However, it's essential to select cladding materials that include insulation for optimal results, as cladding without built-in insulation won't make nearly as much of a difference.

It is usually possible to install insulation yourself, but it’s often better to hire an insulation professional. An experienced insulation pro can determine which type of insulation is best for your space and the R-value get the most value and comfort in your home. Certain types of insulation can cause skin, eye, and lung irritation, and a professional will have the equipment necessary to keep themselves safe and limit the effect on your indoor air quality after the installation. Certain types of insulation—like blown-in and loose-fill insulation—demand a professional for proper functionality and safe installation.

In nearly all cases, you are required to install a vapor barrier in your crawl space. However, local regulations will change based on the local climate and the crawl space's susceptibility to moisture. Even if a vapor barrier is not legally required, it is often a good idea to keep your crawl space dry.
