"Went great! Rich was responsive, punctual, and they did great work (it was a difficult situation because the ceiling slants down over the stairwell and then connects to three surrounding walls--hard to explain but they did a great job!) They are very fairly priced--I shopped around. It's just a pricey endeavor. :)"

"We solicited bids from multiple painters, and chose Lockwood for having what we believed to be the best combination of price and thoroughness.  We do not regret the decision.
We had them paint the walls in (by my calculations) around 500 square feet of rooms, the ceilings of those rooms plus those in a hallway, several interior doors and casements, and baseboards throughout the house (surrounding around 1,000 square feet of rooms).  They patched holes and applied two coats of paint to the walls.
It was a two-day job for two painters, and the estimate -- which again, was on the low end of the ones we obtained -- was spot-on.
We did observe after they were done that one of the agreed-upon interior doors was left unpainted.  They acknowledged the oversight after talking to the painters, and sent one of them out first thing in the morning of the next weekday to correct the issue.  I understand that oversights do happen from time to time, so I appreciate the punctual response time.

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

Popcorn ceilings have fallen out of popularity for several reasons, though opinions on them can vary. The primary drawbacks include an outdated appearance, difficulty with cleaning and maintenance, and potential health risks, as ceilings installed before the 1990s may contain asbestos. As design trends have shifted toward sleeker, more modern finishes, many homeowners now prefer smooth ceilings for their clean look and easier upkeep. However, popcorn ceilings do offer some benefits, such as excellent acoustic properties for noise reduction and the ability to hide imperfections. Some also appreciate their retro charm or find them to be a cost-effective solution. Ultimately, whether they are "bad" depends on personal preference, safety concerns, and aesthetic goals.

Small repairs or applications can be DIY projects, but removing older textures, especially with safety risks, is usually left to professionals.

Using a paint sprayer is the most effective method for painting popcorn ceilings, and it's why professionals choose spraying versus rolling paint. The sprayer simplifies the challenges of painting the texture. However, we don’t recommend that DIYers try to use a sprayer indoors as it could make a significant mess. Using a paint roller on a ladder is the easiest option that results in much less mess.

Yes, you just may need to add an extra coat or two of primer to already painted ceilings. This will help mask the old paint and give you a fresh canvas on which to add your new texture.

How long it takes to repair a ceiling depends on the extent of the damage. Patching a small hole might only take a few minutes, while repairing a water-damaged section of the ceiling could take hours. If there are structural issues, expect your ceiling repair to take several days or longer.
