"I recently had my driveway redone by Rought Masonry, and I’m very pleased with the results. From the initial consultation to the final touches, the team was professional, punctual, and communicative throughout the entire process. They helped me choose the right materials and design for both function and curb appeal. The crew showed up on time, worked efficiently, and left the site clean each day. The finished product is smooth, level, and looks fantastic — a big improvement from what we had before. Pricing was fair and transparent, with no hidden costs. They stuck to the timeline they promised, which I really appreciated. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for quality driveway work. Great craftsmanship and excellent service all around."

"The guys came out to look at the job and give me a quote. I got the quote, but apparently it didn’t cover the whole scope of the work. There were add-Ons that I thought would’ve been included in the original fees. I don’t know about asphalt work, but I do know quality work, and I felt it was lacking. The guys did communicate with me and tried to work with me and the project. In all fairness, my driveway was is disrepair and it does look better."

"I called five different concrete companies. John Henry was the best and best priced. His crew got to the job on time and finished in time. He would text me progress as he went as we were gone on a trip. He came back on a Saturday to clean up and make sure everything was in great order. Just Awesome."

Customers say: Quality work

"Martin Daley (PRECISION PAINTING) and his crew did a outstanding job on painting my brick home. They touched up wooden trim when they thought it needed it, no extra charge for this, in fact one area (wooden trim) he put three coats on before he was satisfied with the way it looked to him. I could not be more pleased with the professional job they did for me. I am waiting on a color match to paint the 6 shutters.. So wait until next week before you drive by and check it out. Yes Martin and his crew will be back next week to paint several rooms inside the home. Glen D. Tulsa, Ok."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.

The answer to whether or not you need to get a permit before you start your driveway can vary widely based on local ordinances and the scope of your driveway ideas. In most urban and suburban areas, a permit is needed before building a new driveway to ensure that a homeowner is using safe materials and proper drainage practices while designing and constructing a new driveway. In some rural areas, a homeowner may not be required to apply for a permit. When building a new driveway on your own, always check with your local building department to see if you need to request a permit. When hiring a driveway contractor, verify that the right permits are being used before driveway construction begins.

Asphalt paving offers several benefits, including cost-effectiveness and a quick installation process. It provides a durable and smooth surface, making it ideal for high-traffic areas. With proper maintenance, asphalt also offers longevity.
