"I purchased an electric tankless and pre-filter/softener directly from the manufacturer and started hunting for a plumber to install it. Now most all plumbers recommended against a tankless hot water heater, and Maplewood wasn't really any different in this regard. BUT, they listened to us, didn't treat us like idiots, and obliged us in our foolishness and they were really awesome. They did the job quickly and without a mess. Also, WE LOVE OUR NEW TANKLESS HOT WATER HEATER! I looked at our electric bill after 2 months (March-April) of using our Stiebel-Eltron E-tankless whole-house water heater unit, and the kW usage actually DECREASED from one year ago for those same two months. That’s right, there was no increase in our electric bill. As expected, our gas usage decreased. My wife was very worried because she often ended up talking to the plumber issuing the dire warnings and predictions about our silly misguided endeavor to get a tankless unit. Now, she couldn’t be happier. Tandem back-to-back showers all day long, if we wanted. Never ending hot water! Thank you Maplewood Plumbing for helping us!"

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Water softeners have many benefits. The most important one is converting previously hard water—water with too many minerals—to more usable, easier water. When we say easier water, we mean water that’s easier to digest, less harsh on skin and clothes, and builds up less in the water system. Softer water may lead to lower energy costs and will extend the lifespan of all appliances that use water.

A water softener is a worthwhile investment if you live in an area with hard water. While hard water is safe to drink, it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that can cause significant problems over time. These minerals build up inside pipes, reducing water flow and eventually corroding the plumbing system, which can lead to leaks and a shortened lifespan. Hard water also damages fixtures and appliances, potentially resulting in costly repairs. Additionally, it makes soaps and detergents less effective, meaning you'll use more product to get things clean. By installing a water softener, you can prevent these issues. The initial investment is often recouped through long-term savings, including lower energy bills, reduced appliance and plumbing maintenance, and spending less on soap and cleaning supplies. Other benefits include cleaner linens, dishes, and clothing, as well as softer water that is gentler on your skin and hair. In some areas, a water softener can also increase your home's value, making it a valuable long-term investment.

Hard water isn’t necessarily bad for you. In some ways, it’s good for you. If you’re deficient in magnesium or calcium, hard water can give you a mineral boost that you wouldn’t get with soft water. However, this is where the benefits of hard water pretty much stop. Hard water can cause many minor inconveniences and lead to costly, premature replacements of your water-using appliances.

It’s not a good idea to oversize your water softener. Doing so will mean the tank doesn’t get full, which can lead to channeling. This leads to a large portion of the resin beads not being utilized and the beads at the bottom of the tank being overused. Over time, this will reduce the efficiency of your system, not to mention that the upfront cost of an oversized softener is unnecessarily high. If you have a timed regeneration cycle rather than a demand-based one, you’ll also spend far more on replacing salt than you need to.

Yes. To get soft water, you can install a water softening system, which will replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions. Water softeners cost anywhere from $200 to $6,000, depending on the size and complexity of the system. You can either install a water softener for the whole house or just at your shower heads. If you’re sensitive to sodium or potassium, you can install a salt-free water conditioner.
