"Juan and his crew were top notch at getting our fence installed and putting the deck on the above ground level kitchen opening. He gave us options for material and price range so we could make a firm budget for the installation. "These guys are truly the drywall ninjas! We had a DIY kitchen remodel project we needed completed ASAP to close on a loan, but time was running too close for us to be able do the drywall ourselves. Worse, we needed to be out of town that weekend. I called Noelge at 7 AM on a Friday to see if they were available. By 7:45 AM Dave was at our house for the estimate. He got a crew assembled -- over a holiday weekend, no less -- and the drywall was complete by the time we got home that Monday. We finished the rest of the project ourselves and the loan closed on time. Through the holiday weekend, Noelge stayed in touch with us and kept us up to date on their progress. They were outstanding to work with from start to finish. The next time I have a drywall project, I'm calling Noelge."

The age of your home can clue you in to whether you have plaster or drywall ceilings. Homes built after the ‘70s are more likely to have drywall ceilings and walls, while older homes have plaster. You can also do the pushpin test: A pushpin will go into drywall, whereas it’s much harder to push one into a plaster wall. If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.

When used correctly, drywall patch kits can work well. However, there are limitations. Specifically, these kits can only cover holes up to 5 inches in diameter. For anything larger than that, you’ll need to cut out the affected section of drywall and replace it with a new piece. That’s a far more complicated process that involves buying the right type of drywall, finding the wall studs, cutting into your wall, and screwing the replacement drywall in place.

Whether a drywall anchor can be reused depends on its material, type, and the method of removal. Plastic anchors, including expansion and self-drilling types, are generally designed for single use as they tend to break or deform upon removal. Metal anchors, such as toggle bolts, are more durable and may be reusable if they are not damaged during extraction. However, with toggle bolts, the toggle piece can fall into the wall cavity when the bolt is removed, making it difficult to retrieve. If an anchor is damaged during removal, for instance by having its head cut off, it cannot be reused regardless of the material.

Applying plaster to a wall will usually cost between $2 and $10 per square foot for both the material and labor. The cost will vary based on the quality of the plaster you’re using and whether or not prep work is required before the work begins. Wall prep can add up to about 10% to your total costs.
