Platinum Remodeling and Handyman Services was founded in February of 2005 when I bought out House Doctors-Southwest Metro. I had been the operations manager of House Doctors since it's inception in late 2002. I ran all of the day to day operations, estimated, scheduled, and managed all projects. When I started Platinum, I hired three of my previous co-workers and we never missed a beat! I have a degree in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Strategies from Iowa State University. This business degree paired with my experience and passion for residential remodeling made this venture a perfect fit. I am the third generation of Shonkwilers to own a construction company. I grew up in the remodeling and construction industry working for my father's company, Shonkwiler Brothers Construction. My father got started working with my grandfather and his company, Shonkwiler Construction. As of September 2007 my father has joined my team. I'm excited to bring his 32+ years in the residential construction industry, unmatched craftsmanship, integrity, and small town Iowa work ethic to the Twin Cities! I have acquired great employees with unique skill sets allowing us to complete a wide variety of projects. All employees are highly capable and take pride in a job well done. My employees are all "handy", but each has their own specialties and I use the employee that best suits your project. All employees have undergone background checks and drug tests. They are bonded and covered by workers compensation. I also have great subcontractors that I use on large projects and where licensed professionals (electricians, machinists, plumbers) are needed. We also use specialty subcontractors for things like large drywall projects, Cambria or stone countertops, floor refinishing, landscaping.....among many others. All of our work comes with a one year warranty on the labor, all materials carry the manufacturer's warranty. All subcontractors warrant their work as well. I have a Minnesota Residential Remodeler's license. The company is covered by liability insurance, worker's compensation and the employees are bonded.

"Platinum was excellent to work with. I have worked with them in the past as well. They are responsive, and the communications are both thorough and prompt. They always showed up when they said would, and they did what they said they would do. The project was completed quickly (but without shortcuts), and we actually came in under budget. I recommend them highly."

For generations, the interior decorating and window treatment specialists at Aero Drapery & Blind have been serving the greater Minneapolis-St. Paul area with exceptional service and quality products. With showrooms in Burnsville, Little Canada, and the newest location Maple Grove, Aero Drapery & Blind offers the consumer and the design industry a professional atmosphere to work with clients on a wide variety of window covering needs. Aero Drapery & Blind also offers free in-home consultations assisting the client with product, size and color. As a family owned business, our top priority is exceeding our client's expectations before, during, and after the sale.

"First vm (9/26) was not responded to; 2nd call (9/30) I called and got a person but again, I got no call from repair service. I then got a call from Caleb (10/1) asking if repair service had called me (no); I called again (10/5) and finally received a call from Kaitlin that evening to schedule an appointment. No service appointment was available until 10/29! This is so not acceptable to have to wait this long, through no fault of my own, to have a broken blind looked at!"

"The owner of Above All Tile and one, John Shar, did three projects for me in my 1930s era home: replaced the original tile in my main entryway; regrouted the tile in a bathroom; and tiled my fireplace. The entryway project was pretty straightforward except that the subfloor had a hump in it and the door jamb was not parallel to the floor. These unexpected issues were addressed at no additional cost and the floor turned out great. The bathroom regrouting required removal and replacement of what was probably the original grout. Some of the grout lines were so thin that it was really challenging to remove it. John worked from about 9:30 in the morning until about 8 at night to get the first phase of the project done. I had selected a grout color; however, John suggested that I reconsider at use a greyer shade of white in order to better match some existing grout. He took his suggestion and as a result, you cannot tell the newly grouted area from the original. The fireplace was a much more complicated project. The hearth was replaced, and this required that the old oak that “framed” the hearth over the oak floor be replaced with a thicker, tapered frame that John had to construct. It looks great. The fireplace surround had been brick. This was tiled over using a hand-made porcelain tile. However, it was extremely complicated to lay out because I wanted the all the tiles to have a vertical orientation and I did not want to have any of then cut. Among other things, this required that John frame in the outer perimeter of the surround with wood and the inner perimeter with plain black tile. The results are gorgeous! John showed himself to be a craftsman with great problem-solving abilities, artistic sensibilities, and a tremendous can-do attitude. His prices were very fair. I recommend Above All without hesitation."

1-2 employees. No subs. Cost is determined by the job. Jobs in northern suburbs or over 20 miles will be subject to travel charge. Free estimates. May contact through e-mail. Accredited member of the Better Business Bureau. Registered with Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry.

"I have used Steve a number of times before, so I knew what to expect. Steve is a very hard worker, puts in a full days work, covers up absolutely everything that might catch a stray drop of paint and cleans up each day before he leaves. Steve knows his business and gets it right. I had initially hired him for a week, but the job was huge, so he gave two more days before he had to move on. He repaired miles of tape on corners of sheetrock that had pulled away form the edges ( typical of newer house builder quality, unfortunately!). He also repaired dozens of nail pops and then needed to repaint entire walls, including an entire winding staircase. I also had Steve repaint the kitchen , dining area, dining room and major portions of three bedrooms and the basement . This was a BIG JOB and very tedious. As always, Steve did a first class job at a very fair price."

We have been helping homeowners and commercial businesses in the twin cities, and surrounding metro areas, with their remodeling projects and painting needs for over 20 years.

"Once again, Colorstyle has provided my family with great quality work at an exceptional price. I first used them about 10 years ago to paint the exterior of my home. It turned out so well that they ended up doing several other houses on my block and the next block up because all my neighbors wanted to know who painted our home. Most recently, I used them to paint some interior rooms, tile, and complete a basement finishing project in a house I was selling, and a complete interior paint job on our new house. They provided excellent advice on economical but effective improvements for selling the house. They just finished removing all the wallpaper and painting the entire interior of our new house to include trim and ceilings and it looks great. They were accommodating of changes we made during the project and quite a bit of missing or damaged trim. They also repaired a damaged ceiling. They were the lowest bid of three we received, and the work was very good. I always recommend them to our friends."

Our company has provided complete general contracting services for residential remodeling projects since 1978. Employees. Use only Licensed & Insured Sub-Contractors with long-term relationships. MN Lic. # BC-2562. Serving The Twin Cities Since 1978. EPA RRP Certified

"Overall, the project went very well, We are happy with the quality of the work and the result. The plans were creative, and we were happy with the design selections and guidance. There were a few unexpected changes to layout due to structural constraints, which resulted in a less efficient flow. The cost of change orders were not clearly explained prior to execution. The contractor was very hands on and at the job site extensively, and she was easy to get a hold of. The carpenter was not available to work on the project on Fridays, which did extend the project timeline. The contractor pointed out repairs/improvements that needed to be made to bring the home up to code. This added cost, but was necessary and appreciated."

Award winning. Merriam Park Painting, Inc. is grounded in the traditional values of honesty, hard work and quality service. We are determined to remain a small customer centered firm while constantly working as a team in becoming efficient and knowledgeable in our field. We strive to create an environment of clarity and openness where all can enjoy the gift of their work, and where our customers are pleased with our quality service Merriam Park Painting began in 1982. Ed Gross and Norm Gross, brothers both grew up on a farm in Southwest Iowa and learned many practical skills among which the skill of painting. Buildings, barns, the house all needed to be kept up and therefore, at an early age they were exposed to the painting process. When Ed was in High School his older brother began a painting business, and therefore, Ed was exposed to more of the painting trade. In the spring of the 1982 after graduating from the University of St. Thomas, Merriam Park Painting began and between five and ten homes were painted that summer. In the early years the company operated as a sole proprietorship and slowly grew. In the late 1980's the business was incorporated and began to increase its services into areas of interior painting, enameling, drywall installation, taping and mudding, plaster repairs, wallpaper hanging, woodwork staining, and varnishing, ceiling texturing as well as painting. In the early 90's Merriam Park Painting began completing some carpentry repairs. This was important because the painter’s were waiting for a carpenter to be found and hired by the homeowner, and it always seemed to delay projects and be inconvenient for the homeowner. Since we have carpenters on board with our company siding repair, rotted wood repair, window sills, installation of storm windows and doors have been a regular part of the painting business. We have also on numerous occasions replaced interior woodwork, installed crown molding, sized old doors to fit properly and other miscellaneous projects in conjunction with our interior painting work. The carpentry addition has proved to be a welcome addition for homeowners. They can hire Merriam Park Painting to complete their preparation and painting, as well as complete carpentry work and wood repair that is needed all in one process. Merriam Park Painting has always had the philosophy of hiring honest, skilled, and hard working people and then training them properly. Our perspective has always been to compensate people well, provide a good environment where people can enjoy the gift of their work and keep employees for the long term. We have been very successful, and it has made a tremendous impact on our business quality and the completeness of our work. We look forward to continuing our residential exterior painting in St. Paul and Minneapolis specializing in re-painting of older homes. We also look forward to continuing our residential interior painting and increasing our presence in the commercial interior painting market. Carpentry work, sheetrock, installation, plaster repair, and wallpaper hanging as well as staining and varnishing work will continue to be at the nucleus enhancing our painting expertise.

Wallpaper Removal questions, answered by experts

The easiest way to remove wallpaper is to use a steamer. The hot steam will loosen the wallpaper paste and make peeling the wallpaper off in large sheets much easier. Unfortunately, steamers can create irreparable damage on your walls, so it’s not a good idea for DIYers to use steamers to remove wallpaper. Instead, hire a professional wallpaper remover to do the work for you. This method will not only speed up the process, but it will also ensure your walls will remain intact post-wallpapering.

Removing a wallpaper border requires the same process to remove full walls of wallpaper. Clear the area, spray down the surface with your hot water and vinegar solution or store-bought spray, wait 10 to 15 minutes, then scrape it off with a putty knife. Sometimes, border wallpaper lifts easier than larger sheets, so you can just peel it right off the wall by hand.

The pros of wallpaper include its durability and longer lifespan than paint, as well as its versatility. The durability can translate to lower long-term costs for upkeep and replacement, and the versatility means you have more options for customizing rooms in your home. Some downsides include that it’s difficult to remove, it’s not ideal for rooms or areas exposed to high moisture content or sun exposure, and it’s tricky to install. A professional wallpaper hanger can help mitigate these issues, though, by installing it properly and in areas suitable for wallpaper.

It’s best to remove wallpaper rather than paint over it. You should only paint over wallpaper if removing it would damage the wall, the surface is relatively smooth, or there are minimal problem areas—such as slight peeling and lifted seams—that you can fix easily. Painting over wallpaper can save time, but it can create more problems if the wallpaper is in poor condition and you don’t properly prep the area for painting. Depending on the state of the wallpaper, color, and textures could show through, and moisture from the paint could loosen the adhesive, causing unsightly bubbling.

It can take a professional anywhere between several hours and a full day to remove wallpaper in one room. How long wallpaper removal takes depends on the type of adhesive, the wallpaper’s age, the condition of the walls, and more.
