"Michelle did a great job with double checking all the specs for the material order and helping me select a color for the pre-stained interior doors and mouldings to blend the old with the new of our remodel project, and Justin did a fantastic job on the install. In addition to installing the doors and hardware, every door has a stop! Great attention to detail, ownership of their work, and generous with their time!"

"-Upon our initial conversations, I could tell he was not comfortable performing any jobs too complicated (or I got the vibe it would take way longer than 2-3 hours) -Upon arrival, instead of building a rapport, as soon as I shook his hand he said "point me to the job" (which is fine for some homeowners, but it wasn't very comfortable having him in our home) -A little disappointed that the things we really wanted to do would've either taken him too long or he did not feel comfortable doing; -He worked much slower than expected, so it didn't feel like we really got a deal (took almost an hour to put anchors in the wall for the 1 mirror and 1 or 2 curtains) -For the things that were done, they were done pretty well (although I think I could've just asked a friend to help do these things) -He wasn't very friendly especially when introduced to my partner -Towards the end of our time, I guess he wanted to "inspect" the jammed doors we asked to be fixed; but he just kept opening and slamming them very loudly and forcefully until the rest of the time was up...."

"This was the second project that I have hired TCH to do. It's so nice to be able to hire one contractor and have the same people do all of the work (plumbing, carpentry, tile work, etc.,) instead of having to hire a different company for each part of the project, or have a company sub out the work. TCH has the best personnel, always punctual and very cooperative. Regularly checking with me to be sure the job gets done the way I expected. They were very careful to protect all areas from dust and debris and made an exceptional effort to clean up at the end of each day and when the job was completed. I also think the price was reasonable. Thanks go out to both Cory's for all of their hard work. Another expert job by TCH."

"J.P. Handyman did an excellent job of figuring out a solution in a challenging situation, where the materials had to work in the outdoors and curve as well as follow the staircase up and down. Materials arrived, I was kept informed of the installation date, and the installation was flawless. Ball park estimate for the job was close enough."

"Pro Custom Builders did a great job replacing the roofing and siding on our 1920s home. Tony took the extra time required to work through some unexpected aspects of an older home - I really appreciate his patience and attention to detail. He also kept me up to date on schedule changes and involved me at key decision points. Customer service was great! Tony also worked doggedly with our insurance provider to resolve the roof claim. Quality work and good value, I would hire him again!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.

House framing can be expensive because the materials are pricey, and the job requires a high level of expertise. The more complex the plans, the more expensive the job, but even the most basic frame needs to be installed with high-quality materials and precision. When pricing your home’s framework, remember that a sturdy frame is necessary to create a safe structure.

Professionals charge between $60 and $95 per hour to install ornamental porch columns. The amount of time they need varies based on the condition of the porch, whether they need to remove old columns, and if there is any damage to your porch's structure. This cost can increase if more issues come up during the installation process.
