If penny tile is in a humid or high-traffic area, like a bathroom, kitchen, or entryway, it needs sealant. Any type of tile and grout is best maintained with a sealant reapplied by a pro every one to two years.

Porcelain and ceramic tiles are made from clay, but porcelain tiles are fired in a kiln at a higher temperature. This makes them more durable, but it also means porcelain is more expensive than ceramic at $3 to $5 more per square foot.

Even with the higher price point, many people choose porcelain over ceramic because there are more color and design options.

If you caulk over old caulk, your new application won’t stick, which is why it’s important to completely remove the old seal. However, once you apply the new caulk properly, you can get 5 to 10 years out of the new seal around the tub.

Unglazed ceramic tiles need to be sealed to keep the porous tile safe from moisture and staining. However, both types of tile can benefit from sealing. Sealant can make the tiles easier to keep clean and offer more resistance to water, spills, and stains.
