Ben Hentges Masonry, LLC is a family owned business. We have over 15 years of experience. Ben and his wife Jeni work together providing beautiful masonry services. Ben views each project that he works on as a true work of art and delivers excellent quality craftsmanship. We have a long list of references and happy customers for your review! www.brickandstonedesigns.com

"Hentges Masonry is a definite 5-star operation! From the quoting process, to working with me on some customizations and through the installation and clean up – everything was perfect. Ben answered all of my questions and used his expertise to guide me on decision making. Ben also had the skills to fix the unexcepted water damage that was behind my previous brick and was incredibly fair with the additional cost. I could not be more pleased with how this project went and how perfectly installed my stone is.... absolutely beautiful. Ben has an eye for detail, and I really appreciated that."

Stone and Gravel questions, answered by experts

A fireplace is, by definition, an enclosed space where you burn wood or other fuel for the purpose of generating light and heat. A firepit burns wood and is much less expensive to build, but they aren’t technically a fireplace as it isn’t enclosed. An outdoor oven—commonly outdoor brick pizza ovens—often uses wood as fuel, but its primary purpose is to cook food, and you’d rarely just burn wood inside them for warmth or aesthetic reasons.

You will repoint over a fraction of the old mortar, but you should scrape away 1/2 to 1 inch of mortar from the joints before repointing. Otherwise, the repointing is only masking the weakened mortar instead of actually replacing it, which could put your chimney at risk of bigger, more expensive damages later on.

It’s called cobblestone because it’s made of stones that are “cobbed” together. A cob is a term that refers to rounded lumps. Originally, cobblestone streets were made from pebbles and stones gathered from riverbeds that had been rounded over time by the passage of water. The term has nothing to do with a cobbler, which is the term for someone who makes and fixes shoes.

Unfortunately, there are many disadvantages to stone houses. They are slow to build and the materials are pricey, both of which balloon the total cost. Stone walls require a more robust foundation, which costs more to install. Running plumbing, electrical, and HVAC through a stone house is much more difficult too, so homeowners need to seriously consider if the aesthetic benefit is worth the cost of building with stone. One of the questions to ask a masonry contractor is if a similar aesthetic can be achieved with another material.

The best tool for drilling into brick or mortar is a rotary hammer drill which is a large hammer drill with low rotation speed and high torque. Regular drills with a hammer function are also excellent tools for drilling into brick when the diameter of the hole is 1/2 inch or less. It might be possible to drill into brick with a standard drill if you’re only drilling a very small hole, but note that masonry work will put a lot of wear on a standard drill, and the tool may not be strong enough to get through brick.
