"Archie and carol were amazing! They were sweet, on time, professional and were extremely easy to have as our cupboard restyle experts. They protected our floors, and kept everything clean during and after doing our job. Would recommend them highly, and would use them again for any job. Thank u so much for a beautiful job!"

Small jobs welcome

"I had my kitchen cabinets refaced by Mike of New Look Cabinets. HIs work and personality place him at the top of my list for a job well done. He does all the work himself and is great at suggesting design ideas. We have a large kitchen with a lot of cabinets and drawers. He installed all new doors and drawers with soft close features and added pullout shelves in the pantry and lower cabinets. He also suggested lazy susans in the corner cabinets to easily access the items that get pushed to the back. He also modified the décor by removing some scallop features and raising the microwave shelf. When he was done, we were very pleased and saved a lot of money by refacing verses replacing our Honey Oak with new Cherry cabinets. Everyone that sees them thinks we have all new cabinets. Mike is a pleasure to work with and his prices are very fair. Thanks Mike, for the new kitchen!"

"Our 65 year old cabinets in our East side Bloomington rambler were in serious need of some updates and upgrades. After getting a high pressure sales pitch with a jaw dropping price tag from one of those chains that advertise on TV, we called Lonn with Custom Refacing. From scheduling the quote, to completing the work, Lonn was professional, prompt and kind. He listened to what we wanted, and offered solutions to improve the look, storage and overall functionality of our kitchen, while working with the glitches in our older kitchen. We ended up refacing some of our cabinets, adding one new one where we previously had shelves, and completely reconfigured and replaced the cabinets above our refrigerator and stove (allowing us to put a microwave above the stove) and improving access to the cupboard above the refrigerator. All of the drawers were replaced with soft close drawers, one new pull-out was installed in our lower cabinets, and a tipout was put under the sink to allow storage of sponges and small cleaning items. The bulk of the project took only two days. (Lonn came back that Saturday to finish installing the pullout above the refrigerator that had not come on time - this took less than an hour) The day the project was scheduled to begin, Lonn and his fellow carpenter, Ryan, arrived promptly at the agreed upon time, they partitioned the kitchen from the rest of the house to minimize the mess, and cleaned up each evening. I am thrilled with the new look and functionality of my kitchen and the ease of the process working with Lonn at Custom Refacing."

Closets questions, answered by experts

You can design your own closet, but it’s usually better to hire a professional to do the work for you. Not only will you get years of design experience to guide you toward the right layout and material choices, but you’ll also only pay slightly more hiring a professional than you would creating your own plans and hiring a carpenter. A high-quality closet designer can provide insight into how to lay out your closet, and they may be able to find you a good deal on the carpentry or complete the work using an affordable, in-house team.

Some features and upgrades you can add (some of which increase the closet’s value) are: modular shelving, motion-activated lighting, climate control, custom lighting, cigar humidors, revolving shoe racks, jewelry shelves, custom woodwork, and built-in laundry hampers. While only truly luxury closets have all of these, many custom closets have at least one special feature listed above.

You may need a building permit to add a closet, depending on the size and kind of work required to install it. The most likely scenario requiring a permit involves changing the structure of the house and performing electrical work for closet lighting. A permit can cost between $100 and $450. If you’re installing a smaller reach-in closet, a permit may not be required, but always check with your local municipality and consult a closet designer or builder.

The time it takes to build a closet varies widely depending on the project's size, complexity, and level of customization. On average, construction can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks.

A simple reach-in closet might be completed in less than a day, while a more complex walk-in closet could take one to two days or more. A typical project often falls in the 2-to-5-day range. However, a large, highly customized walk-in closet that requires structural changes, like moving a load-bearing wall, will take significantly longer.

A professional contractor can provide the most accurate time estimate for your specific project. If you are planning a DIY build, it is best to budget additional time.

Plywood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), and solid wood are all popular options for closet shelving. Plywood and solid wood are sturdy and ideal for extended shelves or heavy items. MDF is a budget-friendly choice for light to moderate storage, but it can sag under heavy weight if not adequately supported. Wire shelving is another alternative that allows airflow, making it especially useful in humid spaces such as laundry rooms or basements.
