Small jobs welcome

"Jeremy was great. He showed up on Sunday afternoon, I showed him the space. He quickly began installing my new water heater. Removed the old one, got rid of the garbage. I pointed out a leak after the install, he looked it over, took off the part in question, and noticed it wasn't factory sealed. He tossed plumber's dope on it and sealed it up. He was able to answer my questions, did the job he came to do, and headed off into the sunset, presumably to plan his next pheasant hunt. In any case, I'd definitely recommend the guy, and plan on utilizing his work for some future projects I have planned around the house. The only recommendation I have, and this goes for most plumbers, is that you prepare for some potentially muddy clean-up. Plumbing can be wet, muddy work. If you want to keep the mud/water down, lay down some plastic or cardboard before your plumber arrives. Thanks Jeremy! Talk to you in the future."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Price variations arise from size, type (tankless or tank), efficiency grades, and installation complexity, including labor and materials.

The average cost to install a new water heater is approximately $1,300, with a typical price range between $880 and $1,800. The final cost depends on several factors, including the type and size of the unit, its location and accessibility, and the amount of labor required. For example, installing a unit in a tight space like a crawl space can increase labor costs. The type of water heater significantly impacts the price: while a conventional gas heater might cost less than $1,000, tankless models can cost around $2,600 to install (and up to $3,500), and solar heaters can cost upwards of $3,700. Other factors that can affect the total price include the fuel type, vent system requirements, permits, and whether any additional plumbing work or repairs from previous water heater damage are needed.

Electric water heaters typically last 10 to 20 years, though proper maintenance can extend their lifespan. If your unit is over a decade old and showing signs of inefficiency—such as higher energy bills, frequent repairs, or leaks—replacement is a smart investment. Tankless models last over 20 years, which can make them a longer-lasting alternative to traditional tank water heaters.

If your water heater is about to celebrate the big 2-0, you may want to consider sending it off to greener pastures. While the water heater may seem to be working well, any conventional, tanked water heater over 10 years of age is at risk of failure. If your water heater is 20 years or older, your best move is to replace your aging heater before it completely breaks down.

The average water heater holds between 40 and 60 gallons, but the exact amount of water that comes out during draining will depend on your unit’s capacity. The amount of time it takes to drain a water heater averages from 10 to 30 minutes.
