"We hired Fisher's Contracting for two smaller projects at our house. Front porch post and a loose hand/newel post rail on our staircase. Fisher's Contracting was complete and total professionalism from start to finish. From the initial phone call asking what it is we were looking to accomplish, to the actual quote and the communication following all the way to the completion of the project, we have never had a better experience with a contractor. The owner, Tom, provided great communication and the crew showed up when they said they would. They were courteous and respectful, worked efficiently and cleaned up after every phase of the project . We had a couple of curve balls along the way (mostly on our part) but the crew handled everything professionally. The project took a day longer than expected but it was only because of their attention to detail and commitment to making sure the project was done correctly We would not hesitate to hire Fisher's Contracting for any project."

Small jobs welcome

"They started and completed the work in the exact time frame given when hired. Gave good advice and did quality work. The estimate was pretty accurate, even with a few snags along the way. Both workers were easy to deal with and I felt comfortable with them in my home. I'm glad I went with them on a whim after reading a glowing review on our local Facebook page. I couldn't be more pleased."

"The guys did great work at a fair price. Once the weather finally cleared they were able to come and completed the brick work in one day. I had a question about part of the job possibly not being done. They came back out the week I called to confirm/take care of it. Everyone that I had contact with was knowledgeable, nice and responsive."

"I highly recommend contracting with Guy Green. He converted a 1952 pantry room under the basement stairs to an attractive half bathroom. Guy is knowledgeable from experience, reliable, considerate and easy to work with. He pays attention to detail. Due to the structure of our house, some plans needed revision. We always went with his recommendations. Itâ s easy to see he takes pride in his work. I couldnâ t be happier."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

The best way to calculate framing costs is by basing your costs on the square footage of your home. On average, framing your home could cost anywhere between $7 and $16 per square foot.

To ensure you don’t go over budget, base your estimates on the higher end of the price range. If you know you’re going to use high-end materials or require a custom or complex build, you might even want to tack on an additional 5% of your budget.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

While framing a basement is not as difficult as finishing a basement, it's something you should typically leave to the pros. That’s because if something is installed correctly, it will affect your entire basement. However, you can take care of some of the smaller tasks, like filling holes or putting up some insulation.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.
