"SKM Property Maintenance (and Dalton specifically) took on what no other decking company wanted to touch. I already had a deck and just needed some fabrication/modification to it. Doug came over and understood what I needed. Dalton came back a couple weeks later to complete the job and I couldn't be happier. I definitely recommend and would hire them again."

Small jobs welcome

"They did a really good job and they stand behind their work. The prices are competitive and they take pride in their work. I had a really old front door that was not insulated and they put in a new one with plenty of insulation. They also put in a new storm door and a garage side door that meant making a new doorway that's sealed properly. They answered all my questions and were respectful of the property"

Small jobs welcome

"My roof concerns were very urgent and I called them right after purchasing the Big Deal. My pipe collar had completely disintegrated off so I needed a new pipe collar. When I called, he told me that was not part of the Big Deal and he told me to call back to the office. It was clear that what I needed would be more than original $149 because what I was asking for was not a part of the Big Deal. I hired someone else because it is going to rain soon and I needed it fixed as soon as possible. The company I hired is charging me less than $149! The guy at MZK Home Improvement & Roofing was nice enough and they were very responsive, but it surprised me that I would have to call back to see how much more it would be. I don’t want to give them a bad rating because there may be responsibly on both ends. Maybe I didn’t read the Big Deal well enough, but I was disappointed because I needed the service as soon as possible and I ended up with a better deal with another company."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Yes, Ipe is more expensive than Trex decking—both in terms of materials and installation (plus, Ipe trees are endangered). On average, Ipe decking costs $10 to $25 per square foot, while Trex decking costs $5 to $12 per square foot. Because Ipe is harder to work with, the price of installation is higher, too. For Ipe decking, you’ll pay between $20 and $45 per square foot for labor. However, with Trex decking, the labor costs range from $8 to $22 per square foot.

Composite decking is the best material for individuals living with disabilities who want to age in place. The material is anti-slip, which increases safety throughout the year. It’s also highly durable and requires minimal maintenance, so it doesn’t add another item to the individual’s to-do list. It’s also a good option for improving wheelchair accessibility at home, as it can easily manage a wheelchair ramp.

Yes, Ipe wood is a popular high-end choice for pool decking. It repels water and is naturally slip-resistant. It's not susceptible to mold, mildew, or rot, either, so it lasts longer and is cleaner and more hygienic than other popular decking materials. However, remember that due to its status, it is a very high-cost wood, and you might find that an alternative would serve you just as well for significantly less.

Yes, it is generally safe to have a fire pit on a deck, but you must adhere to building codes and take several safety precautions. For both built-in and freestanding models, you must use a heat-resistant barrier, such as a fire pit pad or heat shield, between the pit and the deck. Additionally, consider the weight of the fire pit and ensure your deck can structurally support it, reinforcing it if necessary. The fire pit must also be positioned a safe distance from your house, particularly from materials like vinyl siding, to prevent heat damage.

The choice between Trex, a brand of composite decking, and PVC decking depends on your priorities regarding budget, appearance, and environmental impact. Both materials are durable and resistant to moisture and insects. Trex is often considered more eco-friendly because it contains recycled wood and plastic and is 25% recyclable, while PVC is fully synthetic and harder to recycle. Aesthetically, Trex is designed to look more like real wood, whereas PVC often has a glossier, more plastic-like finish. In terms of cost, Trex is typically less expensive than PVC.
