"SKM Property Maintenance (and Dalton specifically) took on what no other decking company wanted to touch. I already had a deck and just needed some fabrication/modification to it. Doug came over and understood what I needed. Dalton came back a couple weeks later to complete the job and I couldn't be happier. I definitely recommend and would hire them again."

Small jobs welcome

"They did a really good job and they stand behind their work. The prices are competitive and they take pride in their work. I had a really old front door that was not insulated and they put in a new one with plenty of insulation. They also put in a new storm door and a garage side door that meant making a new doorway that's sealed properly. They answered all my questions and were respectful of the property"

"My experience did not go well. The gutter cleaning portion left a mess behind and I had to call them to have them clean up their mess. I also had to call them back to follow up about the roof inspection and to see the pictures they took. They missed the opportunity to present a roofing bid knowing the condition of my roof, I had to ask them about that. If they were being proactive, they would have done it without me asking."

Small jobs welcome

"Nabil Blaik's Fence Staining and Pressure Washing was one of the best companies I have ever worked with. He was very respectful, honest and professional. The job was done in a very timely manner. He went above and beyond to make sure I was completely satisfied with the project. I wish we could have more individuals like him in this world. He takes pride in his work, and has the highest integrity. I would definitely recommended him to anyone who needs their houses or decks taken care of. My deck looks brand new. Completely satisfied."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

You do not have to dig footers for a deck as long as it meets local code and holds up to weather in your area. If you live somewhere that experiences high winds and earthquakes, you may need to dig for your deck posts. Deck blocks, post anchors with base plates, and helical pile systems are the three no-dig deck post options you can choose from if local code permits.

A deck doesn’t have to be perfectly level. Many pros even recommend a gentle slope to ensure proper drainage and increase longevity. The ideal gentle slope is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the property, leading water away from the home to prevent pooling and reduce the risk of damage. It also minimizes rot, mold, and other moisture-related problems.

Coping is the material that lines the perimeter of a pool and seals the transition between the top of the pool wall and the water. Decking surrounds the poolscape and extends far beyond the water's edge to provide a safe walking and lounging area. In short, coping is the border between the decking and the pool itself.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

A deck that isn’t attached to a house is called a floating or freestanding deck. These standalone decks are built near ground level, so they usually don’t need deck stairs. Some don’t even require permits. Generally speaking, building a floating deck is faster and more DIY-friendly than constructing one that’s connected to your home.
