"I could not recommend this team more highly.  In addition to extreme professionalism, reliability and attention to detail,  technical skill is very impressive.  And Doug Fox has been scrupulous in working with me in advance to outline expectations, cost estimates, materials choices, etc. as well as post-job in documenting time & materials for invoicing.  He maintains a very tidy work area and clean-up is meticulous.

The greenhouse required both art and science -- I presented them with a garageful of assorted old wooden windows, shutters, glass block and miscellaneous materials, and a vague sketch of the "shabby chic" flower-starting garden building I  had in mind.  Doug did a great deal of online research about similar "upcycling" projects and showed me  his findings.  Then the duo organized the materials, mulled design possibilities and tested options, keeping my general size parameters in mind.  Best of all, they were engaged and interested in the job and seemed to enjoy the challenge.  (They also were very kind and tolerant of my pesty little Chihuahuas when the dogs took a break in the yard.)

To my  absolute astonishment and delight, they turned that oddball collection of old materials into a generous-sized, symmetrical, beautiful "vintage-look" greenhouse that is the envy of all who see it.  he basic frame of 4x4s was perfectly placed and braced with extra wood while the cement cured.  Many of the windows and shutters they designed in to be active to allow for ventilation.  Doug and Nate also figured out how to incorporate some old glass block that had sentimental value to me, and they replaced some deteriorated window glass and sealed the rest, so the old windows didn't detract from the functionality of the greenhouse.  They  found an antique door in my garage rafters, cut it down to size, inset it with a spare casement window and it made the perfect entryway for the greenhouse.  They came up with a roofing solution that utilized some old storm windows and withstood this bitter, snowy winter weather with nary a leak, crack or sag.  When I decided to line part of the inside rear roof with tin ceiling tiles, they figured out how to do so without compromising the interior design.  I entered the greenhouse today and it's warm and dry.

If you have a job that requires creativity, enthusiasm  and initiative in additional to technical skill, this is the team you want!   I look forward to having Doug do more carpentry, remodeling and painting at my home in the coming months and years."

"The project involved the repair of ceiling and wall drywall damage in an office near a bay window caused by a leaking roof. We had used KrisKratf previously for another project and were aware of the high quality of work performed. Kris and his crew did an outstanding job repairing the drywall. They moved all furniture and décor and cordoned off the area to minimize dust. They replaced the old insulation, provided an improved framing to support the ceiling work, installed the drywall, applied mud, sanded and painted. When complete, they returned all the furniture back to its proper location and left the house dust free. Miraculously, they accomplished all this in a day and a half. A job well done."

"This regards a huge repair job after a pipe burst in our rental condo. It did happen a couple of years ago (December 2014) but it remains in my memory as a truly positive experience. The water destroyed the drywall in several rooms. We contacted Gary through Home Asvisor Handyman for the repairs. He contacted us soon after. When he arrived little did he know we actually had several projects that we needed done so we could sell the condo. Gary listened to our needs and then organized how the projects would be completed. The projects included the drywall repair for the living room, dining room, repair of the pipe that burst, added an access door to the plumbing area where the busted pipe occurred, installed tile flooring in the kitchen, replaced all the cabinets in the kitchen, installed a new kitchen light fixture, organized the replacement of the counter tops, reorganized the kitchen plan so the refrigerator and stove were not side by side, installed a new kitchen faucet and fixed the faucet after a couple of weeks when the interior piece was found to be defective, remodeled th entire bathroom tiling on the floor and walls, installed a new tub and fixtures, replaced the entry door and screen door, replaced all the interior doors, painted the entire place, fixed a longstanding problem for two side by side 8 foot windows by removing them and repairing the woodwork as well as refininshing the walls afterwards (in the middle of winter!--impressive). He helped us make decisions and worked with whatever selections we made in such a timely manner. He was in contact with us throughout the projects and provided us all the receipts, estimates, and final costs for each project that he undertook. He even would send picures as the projects progressed or were completed. He was so easy to work with and we appreciated him and hos work immensely! Gary held a high standard for the work that he did and his integrity was beyond reproach for being accountable and responsible. Alice & Tim"

Window Shutters questions, answered by experts

Shutters are still very common in Southern, farmhouse, and traditional-style homes, especially those in warm climates who can benefit from the increased efficiency. While modern homes and designs tend to shy away from shutters, shutters are a timeless design style that will likely be around for decades to come.

Estate shutters offer more energy efficiency, privacy, and light control than blinds. They provide better insulation against heat and cold, lowering your energy bills. They’re also sturdy, durable, and last much longer than blinds (up to 50 years or longer). They’re also low-maintenance and can add curb appeal to your home. The return on investment (ROI) for estate shutters is around 75%.

Wood is the most classic shutter material. Common options include pine, cedar, or brasswood. MDF shutters are also a more affordable option that retains the timeless, classic look. Composite shutters, mainly vinyl and aluminum shutters, have also become more popular over the years. You may also find steel shutters, sometimes referred to as security shutters, used on the exterior. Shutters also come in various colors and finishes, adding another layer of design flexibility.

Plantation shutters cost an average of $2,990, making them one of the pricier shutter options. However, they offer a 75% return on your investment and are great options for boosting curb appeal and property value. Most people go for plantation shutters for their timeless, vintage look. They also provide the strongest light blocking and temperature control for your home.

The average shutter is designed to last 20 to 25 years. Proper maintenance for the type of shutters you have is essential for helping them reach their full potential.
