"I am very pleased with the results. The existing fiberglass shower was removed, as well as the ceramic tile in other area of bathroom. I purchased the tile which was my choice, McDowell Tile would have done that if that was my desire. Subway tile (4" x12") was installed floor to ceiling, octagon tile on the shower floor, and 12" x 12" floor tile on the remaining bath area. Jim McDowell is the owner of the company and is easy to work with and takes pride in doing the job right (not cutting corners/taking short cuts). He had to build part of a wall out to accommodate the change from fiberglass to tile, plus I added some additional tiling during the process. I will hire McDowell's again if/when the need arises and highly recommend him for your bathroom tiling (or remodel - he can handle more than the tiling if you wish)."

"I had a father son team do the install. They spent extra time on all the finishing details. The seller is a bit high pressure but after having several estimates their big advantage was timing. One thing the salesman got wrong however is the flush mount vents. He told me they were in backorder and can be installed later. The installers made it clear they they were indeed back ordered but if I wanted then they needed during the install. Luckily I found a set at LL and my installers stained and installed them."

"Our basement looks amazing and this is in large part to Mike and Dave's work. Mike was professional, courteous, always on time, and super clean. His work looks amazing and we are so happy with the result. He did the crown moulding around the ceiling and trim around the doors and floor, built us a bar-like area, opened a wall and completed a railing for our stairs, and did all of our tile work (shower walls and floor as well as bar area). In addition, he constructed built-in shelves in a giant closet that exceeded our expectations. We will refer him to anyone that is looking for carpentry or even tile work! So happy we found him!"

"It worked out well. Everything was fine. The day they had originally planned to come I realized I had a doctor's appointment, so they rescheduled. They ran over the two hour time frame. I had to pay for two more hours because they had to re-tile and they did a little plastering of my ceiling. I had a leak and it buckled a little area of my ceiling, but they plastered that and they have to come back to repaint it. They had to take the vanity back out to get to the wall to put in the tile and they had to reattach the vanity. They say two hours, but they divide the time. One hour per person, so instead of 2 hours it is one hour per person. They say it is two labor hours because each person does an hour of work. They do good work. Some people might be thrown off when they say two hours and they work an hour between the two of them. It is okay as long as they are consistently working that time frame. They pretty much knew what they had to do. I explained to them what needed to be done and they went about getting it done. I had to buy the materials for them to provide the labor. I plan to use them to finish up the total job that needs to be done. The ceiling needs repainted. They tore out the vanity and put the new vanity in."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Grout lines should typically be between 1/8 to 3/16 inch thick. This ensures enough room for the grout to dry properly and makes them wide enough to look clean and professional. If grout lines are too small, it can be easier to see imperfections in the spacing.

The best paints for shower tiles include epoxy, latex, or acrylic. Ideally, you should look for paints that are waterproof and mildew-resistant if you plan to paint shower or other bathroom tiles. You can even find waterproof paints made specifically for tiled surfaces, which will be the best option for shower tile paint that lasts as long as possible.

To make a small bathroom look bigger, choose light-colored tiles in a medium- to large-format size. Lighter colors like white, cream, or light gray help open up a room, making it feel larger and more airy. While it may seem counterintuitive, small tiles can actually make a bathroom look smaller because the increased number of grout lines creates a busy pattern that visually shrinks the space. Instead, opt for medium- or large-format tiles for a more seamless, expansive appearance. For the best effect, pair your tiles with a matching or similarly colored grout to create a continuous surface that enhances the illusion of a larger area. Avoid dark colors, heavy patterns, and contrasting grout, as these can make the space feel more confined.

Whether you use a brush or roller depends on the size, shape, and amount of tiles. Rollers are easier to maneuver over large areas and can apply a more even coat of paint in a shorter time frame with no visible brushstrokes. Brushes are best for precision work, particularly in very small areas. If you don't want visible brushstrokes on your painted tiles, you can paint details with small foam brushes instead of bristled paint brushes.

If you’re out of spacers for your tile installation, you can use pennies. Each time you place a tile, stick the pennies around the edges (on the sides and the corners). Like working with spacers, you’ll want the same amount of space around each tile before they set.
