"McFadden Stump & Tree Removal were prompt, professional, and thorough. Although I had only scheduled a quote on the tree the young man who showed up had just come from a stump grinding job in Alpena and made me a good offer to grind four stumps in my yard. "Troy came out same day when a tree fell on my clients home. He met me on site and got right to work. No hesitation. Barely even talked price. He wanted that tree off of my clients home so it could be tarped right away before we talked further. He put the client first. Then after we talked pricing (super competitive and well worth what they charge) he got right to work and didnt stop until completion. Late winter is ideal, but if you’re pruning apple trees in the spring, prune them as early as possible in the season. You want to ensure your tree is just creeping out of dormancy and hasn’t started pushing out new growth. If you prune your tree too late into spring, you generally won’t see results until the following year.

That said, there’s no pruning season for unhealthy growth. Remove dead, dying, or diseased branches as soon as you notice them, regardless of the time of year.

The best tools for tree removal include a chainsaw for large trees, an ax for notching and cutting down small trees, and a wedge to help control the direction a tree falls in. A hatchet can be useful for very small trees, but won’t be effective for medium to large trees. 

A few signs a tree may be dead is if the leaves are dead and there are no signs of new blooms. You can also perform a scratch test on some of the branches to check the condition of the cambium layer beneath the bark.

If it is green, it is still alive, but if several are dry, brittle, and brown, the tree may be dying or dead. Always consult an arborist before assuming your tree is dead because you may be able to save it.

If you’re planning on keeping the tree, unless the roots are invasive, there’s no need to remove them, as doing so can cause damage to the tree. If the tree has been cut down and the stump and roots are left, grinding and removing the stump can cause root decay for some species. For other species, the stump and roots will need to be removed to prevent pests, disease, and possible tree regrowth.

Once you confirm a tree is dead, you should remove it. Dead trees eventually fall, and larger trees in particular can cause damage to rooftops, fencing, flowers, and other objects. As we mentioned, letting decayed wood stay in your yard also invites risks to the surrounding landscaping and vegetation.
