Flex is necessary for soldering copper pipe. This acidic paste attracts the solder, pulling it deeper into the joint so the solder fills all the gaps between the two metal fittings. While many solder products contain small amounts of flux, you need to apply the additional flux paste to ensure you achieve a water-tight fit between the two copper pipes.

For a long time, copper was our only plumbing material option. Thankfully, that is no longer the case. Copper pipes have been used since the 1940s and became most popular around 1963. For added safety, especially when you are away from home, maintaining a temperature between 55 and 60 degrees will provide enough warmth to keep pipes from freezing and help you avoid expensive water damage from burst pipes.

There are several methods to temporarily or permanently fix a burst pipe. In a pinch, you can seal up a small leak with either silicon pipe tape or epoxy specifically designed for this purpose. You can also purchase a pipe repair kit that supplies a clamp and gasket to seal the pipe. In the long term, a plumber will either remove the damaged area of the pipe and add a replacement coupling or replace the entire length of the pipe between joints.

Your pipes will not freeze just because you’ve turned your water heater off. Rather, pipes freeze when temperatures outside drop below freezing and the pipes are not properly insulated. In fact, leaving your faucets trickling with warm water (from the water heater) is one of the best ways to prevent your pipes from freezing in the winter.
