Yes, you can use too much plumber’s tape. Adding more tape than necessary will make it difficult to make the pipe connection and has no added benefit. Only wrap the tape around a pipe thread three to six times, depending on the size of the pipe and the thickness of the tape.

It can be helpful to open one or two faucets before turning on the water main again. Turning off the main shut-off valve will introduce some air into your pipes. Having at least one faucet open should allow the air to clear as the water refills the pipes. Try to open faucets far from the main shut-off valve and on the highest floor of the house.

There are several methods to temporarily or permanently fix a burst pipe. In a pinch, you can seal up a small leak with either silicon pipe tape or epoxy specifically designed for this purpose. You can also purchase a pipe repair kit that supplies a clamp and gasket to seal the pipe. In the long term, a plumber will either remove the damaged area of the pipe and add a replacement coupling or replace the entire length of the pipe between joints.
