Chip seal layers gravel and a liquid bitumen one at a time on-site, while asphalt directly pours a pre-combined mixture. Asphalt must be sealed, but it will last up to four times as long as chip seal driveways. Aesthetically, chip seal has a natural, rustic look compared to the traditional asphalt slab.

An asphalt driveway should be at least 3 inches thick over a compacted gravel base. Areas with poor drainage should have a thicker stone base. An asphalt overlay or top coat costs between $3 and $7 per square foot. For a standard, single-car driveway that’s 10 feet wide and 20 feet long, that’s a total of between $600 and $1,400. For a two-car driveway, you’re looking at a total of between $1,200 and $3,000.
