"It was a big build. Coordination of trades was important. Their work to navigate permits with multiple government agencies kept the project on track and on budget. . It's drawn a lot of neighborhood attention. One of the goals was to make this large shop fit into the neighborhood. Job well done."

"The contracted the work off to a third party. Jon took longer than expected. The windows was installed pretty good from the looks. Communication could have been better with knowing the job will take longer and what types of trims I wanted for the windows. As the contractor that was hired for this job by this company. Did a good job with putting up decent trim. As for the new windows they look great. I purchased the myself and hired sentri homes to install them. I will need to have a my siding on my house redone to be closer to the new windows so the gaps are not so obvious. That was not expected at first. But from old storm windows and not knowing how they were put in originally. There was some unknown things that was learned from the job being completed. I will have the siding of the house slightly done to match really good for what I wanted later on. My only concern is better communication with sentri homes. Overall they were great when I did talk to them."

"Nyboer Builders did a great job! They were very professional. Travis fixed the roof leak and replaced the rotted soffit.  He did an excellent job making the new soffit match the old soffit on our 80+ year old house. Communication was great. Mandy manages the office and she was a pleasure to talk to and work with. This family owned business was a pleasure doing business with. We highly recommend them and we will definitely call them again when our old house needs the loving care of a professional roofer or  contractor. Thank you Nyboer family!"

"Preston of G-1 Plumbing performed the services and addressed the toilet & drain problem. He was unable to stop leak(made it worse) & submitted his recs to Choice Home for review. I was unable to understand Choice Home's response regarding the faucet leak. Their review stated faucet needed to be replaced BUT it was under "builder's warranty." I built this home in 2005. There is no "builder's warranty" now. I cancelled the proposed work order & paid out-of-pocket. A Friend, who was familiar with my builder and knows faucet components, came to my home, adjusted/cleaned the faucet cartridge and stopped the leak. The CHW tech, Preston, is conscientiuos, however, IMHO lacked the knowledge & experience to stop my leak. Home Warranty Companies, at least in my area, hire owner/operators who need the work to build their business and are NOT the most experienced/knowledgeable & are willing to work for less money. In my experience, Home Warranty Companies want the CHEAPEST resolution, not the BEST. I would recommend G-1 Plumbing for most plumbing issues."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Several daily habits accelerate damage to home building work. Piling shoveled snow against your foundation allows moisture infiltration and freeze-thaw damage. Overusing rock salt near new concrete causes surface spalling. In MI, failing to clean gutters in the fall creates severe winter ice dams that destroy roofs. Blocking your attic vents during winter traps moisture, leading to structural wood rot. Avoid overwatering landscaping near the house to prevent foundation pressure.

Helpful?

Older properties complicate home building. Pre-1950 houses in Lansing feature knob-and-tube wiring, balloon framing, and unreinforced stone foundations that require specialized upgrades before adding new structures. Plaster walls make plumbing and electrical work difficult. Additionally, flat topography and high water tables create severe drainage challenges for below-grade additions. Hire a professional to identify load-bearing walls, as older framing rarely follows predictable patterns, and opening walls without investigation compromises structural integrity.

Helpful?

Before starting home building, contact the local building safety office early to secure necessary permits. Verify your zoning compliance and check if your property sits in a historic district or floodplain. Always call the underground utility locating service three days before digging. Investigate your soil conditions, as Lansing contains expansive clay soils. For homes built before 1978, test for lead paint and asbestos. Finally, confirm your contractor carries workers' compensation insurance.

Helpful?

Build a seasonal inspection routine to protect your home building investments. In the spring, inspect your foundation for water intrusion following the MI snowmelt and verify your sump pump operates correctly. During summer, check wood framing for moisture damage. In the fall, clean your gutters and seal exterior gaps to prevent winter ice dams. Throughout winter, monitor your rooflines for ice buildup and check new additions for heavy snow load stress.

Helpful?

After completing home building, obtain a final inspection sign-off or certificate of occupancy to avoid legal complications. Close out all open permits to ensure a smooth future home sale. In Lansing, monitor newly poured concrete during the first winter for freeze-thaw cracking. Check your grading to confirm water drains away from the foundation, as local clay soils settle easily. Finally, update your homeowner insurance policy to cover the new improvements.
