"Mr. Backsplash did a wonderful job. Everything looks beautiful and just how I had imagined. They cleaned up after themselves and were pleasant to work with. I really appreciate that they took my job for less than their usual minimum amount. It’s hard to get Contractors out for small jobs, but they came out and did a great job! Highly recommend!"

"Honest, reliable, polite and courteous!! They treat your home the way they would treat theirs -- they laid tarps down on everything to make sure no harm was done and then meticulously cleaned up after themselves. They cleaned and re-grouted our bathroom floor tile and re-caulked the tub, in addition to cleaning the foyer tile and grout. Everything looks brand new again!! We highly recommend Chuck and his son, Jagr, for any tile projects you need professional help on -- You will love the results !!"

"The craftsmanship was perfect. From tearing out the old floor, cement board installation, tiling and grout- it is flawless. They took great detail and time to cut pieces without piecing as well as every tile was articulately off set. They left each day with the house clean, great communication and amazing work ethic! Highly recommend!!!"

"Highly recommended! True professionals. Simon answered the phone the 1st time I called and was able to provide an estimate over the phone. The day of installation they showed up on time and even gave a courtesy call 30 minutes prior. They cleaned up everything before they left. We had 700 square feet of engineered hardwood installed and it came out amazing. We will definitely be using Simon for our future projects."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Porcelain and ceramic tiles are made from clay, but porcelain tiles are fired in a kiln at a higher temperature. This makes them more durable, but it also means porcelain is more expensive than ceramic at $3 to $5 more per square foot.

Even with the higher price point, many people choose porcelain over ceramic because there are more color and design options.

Yes, you can install a backsplash directly onto drywall, provided the wall is properly prepped, clean, and dry. For best results, especially in kitchen areas, your walls should be made of moisture-resistant drywall, often called green board. If your current wall isn't moisture-resistant, it's recommended to replace it before installing the backsplash. For even greater protection against water damage, you can remove the existing drywall and install a tile backer board or cement board instead. While properly installed standard drywall is typically strong enough to support a backsplash, some local building codes may require water-resistant materials in kitchen areas, so it's a good idea to check.

Yes, it would be best if you waterproofed your shower walls before tiling. The cement backing board behind the tile is not waterproof; it’s only water-resistant. On top of your tile backing board, be sure to use a waterproof shower membrane before you start installing your shower tiles.

Glass tile is one of the easiest materials to maintain. It is both stain and water-resistant, making it easy to clean and incredibly durable. This also makes it resistant to mold and mildew. However, make sure it’s kept clean, otherwise, your grout might start to degrade. Glass is liable to scratch, so ensure you’re using non-abrasive materials and products, like soft sponges and wipes.

Figure out how much tile you need by measuring the backsplash area. Measure the height and length in feet and multiply to get the square footage. Don’t make adjustments for outlets or small cutouts but subtract the square footage for windows or other large obstructions from the total. To account for waste, get 10% more than your calculation.
