"I have limited experience with dealing with contractors. Jeff set the bar extremely high. Always shows up when he said he would, extremely polite and knowledgeable. My wife and I were remodeling the basement and Jeff worked with our budget and was a perfectionist when it came to the small details. We even had an issue with leaking that caused Jeff to take down some drywall that he had already completed. He was understanding and still stood with his price he quoted up front. A true professional at his craft and I would highly recommend Jeff to anyone who needs some help. Thank you Jeff."

"Derek was extremely helpful and super nice. I called him for some help unhinging a door and helping to fix some furniture and he was able to come within the hour. Not only was he very fast, but also did a great job with everything we needed. Overall, Derek was great and extremely friendly. I can honestly say he is one of the best handymen I have ever hired."

Central Vacuum Systems questions, answered by experts

While caulking is handy for quite a bit of jobs, it’s still limited. Any crack or gap larger than 1/4 inch is best left for a more intensive repair job. When you hire house painters, they should run a thorough check to see what they need to repair before they start the job.

Large repairs that caulking typically won’t do well with include cracks or holes larger than a 1/4 inch, rotted wood, or metal surfaces, such as garage doors.

Yes, installing a central vacuum system typically adds value to your home. The ease of use, longevity, and superior suction power of a central vacuum system can add up to $2,000 to your home’s value if you decide to sell. Potential buyers may consider the central vacuum a perk to purchasing your home.

No. Only the hose or the attachments are portable in a central vacuum system. A portable vacuum is a standalone model like a stick, canister, or upright. A central vacuum system is defined by a central power unit, which is installed in one place like an AC unit, and the connected network of piping to funnel the suction.

If your central vacuum has lost suction, you probably have a clog in the system. You can remove a clog yourself using a portable vacuum cleaner or central vacuum maintenance sheets. Stubborn clogs or damage to the system require a specialized technician to repair.

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space
