"HomeSpec was spectacular. Within 24 hours of contacting HomeSpec via email, Brian Snyder inspected the problem and submitted a bid. It required minimal disruption to my home and was one-half of my expected cost. Eight days after the email, Chuck Watson and his team of four spent 11 hours installing drain tiles under one side of the basement floor, a new sump pump, a French drain and dry well. It was 28 degrees outdoors, the ground was frozen, and they ran into lots of roots. Then they cleaned up, and Chuck explained the new installations. John Lont came back after the weekend to move my basement laundry back in place and shovel dirt off the front walk. (They had tunneled under it.) He even found a washer hose that needed replacement. They were professional, kind, and treated me with respect."

"Shout out to Joe and James, the team from FSM, who came out to our house today to level out two sidewalks that had sunk towards the house. They did a great job, raising both sidewalks so that the water now drains away from the house. Very happy with the outcome."

French Drains questions, answered by experts

A clogged air gap can cause a dishwasher not to drain. There are, however, other potential issues that can lead to improper drainage. For example, if you have attached the air gap to a garbage disposal and forgotten to remove the knockout plug, wastewater may backflow into the dishwasher. Check that the air gap is installed properly, and then look for clogs in the air gap and dishwasher filters.

Yes, you can use hydrogen peroxide to unclog a drain. Instead of using a baking soda and vinegar solution, you can use baking soda with hydrogen peroxide. The process to unclog a drain is the same as with vinegar, but use 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide instead.

If your dishwasher isn’t draining, some common causes include a clogged drain filter, drain hose, or air gap. Also, if you have a garbage disposal, a clog in the disposal can back up your dishwasher since they share plumbing, as can a clog in your kitchen sink’s plumbing. A handy DIYer may be able to figure out how to unclog a dishwasher, but you may need to call in a plumber if you can’t locate and clear the clog yourself.

Your sewer line can get grimy quickly. To prevent sludge buildup in your sewer line, pour a mixture of 1/3 cup of vinegar and 1/3 cup of baking soda down each drain in your home once a month. After about 30 minutes, flush the drain with hot water.

Some plumbers recommend 3/4 cup of bleach instead to clean any germs and bacteria that may build up in your sewer line. But this won’t break down any active clogs, and it cannot be combined with vinegar, as the mixture will create a toxic, hazardous gas.

You should not attempt to snake your sewer yourself. Accessing and snaking your sewer requires heavy-duty equipment, and while renting is possible, misusing it can damage your sewer main and leave you with very expensive repair costs, not to mention potential environmental issues and severe water damage. Accessing your sewer also exposes you to hazardous sewer gasses, and failing to seal the sewer properly after work can be very dangerous. It’s always best to hire a professional sewer cleaner near you to handle this type of work.
