If you’re trying to cover up damaged vinyl siding with some other material, properly repairing the damage is likely just as easy. Avoid covering up damaged siding under most circumstances. Water and mold can easily get trapped behind it and cause more harm than the damage already there. 

If you need a fast, temporary repair until you have time to fix the damage properly, use a generous amount of caulk or spray foam insulation to fill the gap, knowing that you’ll need to remove the material later. 

The easiest way to remove vinyl siding is with a zip tool, which can be purchased at a local hardware store for less than $10. This tool works by slipping underneath a panel to disconnect two pieces of vinyl siding from one another. Once the tool is hooked underneath, slide the tool across the vinyl panel and pry upward.

On average, siding repair costs about $900, ranging from about $360 to $1,450. The largest cost factors of this project include the type of siding, location, the extent of the damage, and the time of year. Repairing different types of siding typically cost  as follows:

  • Vinyl siding: $2–$4 per square foot

  • Fiber cement: $3–$11 per square foot

  • Wood: $4–$13 per square foot

  • Aluminum siding: $5–$7 per square foot

  • Clapboard: $5–$10 per square foot

  • Brick: $6–$18 per square foot

  • Stucco: $9–$50 per square foot

  • Stone: $10–$30 per square foot

It’s possible to match new vinyl to your old siding, but it can be difficult. First, vinyl siding fades in the sunlight, so even after a few years, it may have a markedly different appearance than its original color. Second, the composition and manufacturing techniques of vinyl siding are always being updated, which means older vinyl siding is discontinued quite frequently. That increases the chances you won’t be able to match the exact color and design of your previous siding.

It is possible to restore vinyl siding, as it’s known to fade in color with exposure to the elements. Worse, the fading isn’t always uniform around the house. Making a siding repair that’s 100% invisible is difficult, if not impossible. You can get close to perfect, but not always. 

However, if you have significant discoloration, wish to change the color of your house, or want to put off replacement for a year, you’re not entirely out of luck. You may be surprised to learn that you can paint your vinyl siding with good results, although not incredibly long-lasting.
