"The locksmith had to rework the new deadbolt I bought to make it fit the door and rekeyed the existing lower knob lock to make one key work on both locks. It was a longer job but the work was exceptional and amazingly cheap!"

"Very pleased. Each contact with this company was professional, polite, and helpful. I was given over-the-phone estimates for the work including the cost if I brought the item in versus having someone out to the house. I didn't need an appointment, and when we came in the locksmith went to work right away fixing the lock. He quickly assessed and fixed the problem, spent a little extra time locking and unlocking it to be sure that I wouldn't have a problem once I got it home, and explained how over-filling the chest may have contributed to the problem. He even helped my husband carry the chest back out to our car."

"Quote was $150, price in total was $350. Gave them tip, but had to do a lot of clean up myself afterwards. They found a fundamental flaw with the vent (pipe broken), and referred me to another person (a locksmith) to fix it. Charge was $1400. I think I should have vetted the service provider rather than going with the first one."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

A deadbolt differs from a regular lock in its design, construction, and security level. Regular locks are typically used for interior doors, such as for bedrooms and bathrooms, and provide minimal security. They are easy to install and use, often featuring a simple locking mechanism on the inside. In contrast, a deadbolt is one of the most secure locks you can install on an exterior door. Its internal construction is designed to withstand significant force, adding a crucial layer of security that can deter intruders. While deadbolts may be more expensive and complicated to install, they are cost-effective for the security they provide and are built to hold up to wear and tear.

Yes, many locksmiths offer 24/7 emergency services for business lockouts, broken keys, and security breaches.

Regrettably, entirely pick-proof locks don't exist unless you opt for keyless varieties. Locks advertised as "pick-proof" are, in reality, more resilient against lock-picking and bumping attempts because of complex mechanisms consisting of pins and sidebars. These locks work like this—they assign two tasks to the key, enhancing security by making unauthorized entry more challenging.

Door locks should be changed roughly every seven years. The average lifespan of a door lock is seven to 10 years, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and change them early, especially if they are showing signs of wear and tear. Examples of deterioration include visible rust and difficulty opening or closing the door. Some locks can work safely beyond 10 years, but it depends on how often they are used and whether they are exposed to damaging environmental conditions like precipitation or extreme temperatures.

Locksmiths recommend changing your locks once every seven years for the best security at your home. Locks can wear out over time, so you should inspect your locks regularly. A higher grade lock provides you with more cycles than those with a lower grade.
